Bahrain names Jewish woman as ambassador to US
Source: Associated Press

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) -- Bahrain's king has appointed a woman believed to be the Arab world's first Jewish ambassador as the country's envoy to Washington.

Lawmaker Houda Nonoo said she was proud to serve her country "first of all as a Bahraini," adding she was not chosen for the post because of her religion.

"It is a great honor to have been appointed as the first female ambassador to the United States of America and I am looking forward to meeting this new challenge," Nonoo told The Associated Press by telephone.

The Wednesday decree issued by King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa and reported by the official Bahrain News Agency had not specified where Nonoo, a 43-year-old mother of two boys, would be posted. But her appointment to the U.S. ambassadorship was rumored for months.

9. Bahrain is an anomaly in the region.
It shares very little in common with the other states.

2. Bahrain, the most liberal of the Arab petrostates...
Bahrain is where Saudis go to drink and party. It's like Las Vegas or Atlantic City to them.

6. "Allah can't see over the bridge"
That's a Saudi saying with regard to Bahrain... Sort of like "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". :)

I greatly enjoyed the 6 months I spent there courtesy of Uncle Sam...

5. I wonder if this is to get her out of the way...
The blogs I regularly read for Bahrain haven't updated yet, so I don't know what the local reaction is....but I wonder if she is being put out of the way so she can't cause problems politically... Pure speculation on my part; I don't know how she leans on the various issues confronting the Kingdom, other than to guess she wouldn't be supporting the various pushes for wide-spread implementation of Sharia law...

Or maybe I read too much into things, and His Royal Majesty is merely putting the best person he knows of in for the job.
