BBC (Tuesday): UN to rule on elections in Iraq

UN to rule on elections in Iraq

The United Nations has said it is willing to send a team of experts to Iraq to decide whether it will be possible to hold early elections.
They will meet a broad range of Iraqis, Secretary General Kofi Annan said.
But the mission will have to be cleared by UN security officials who will go to Iraq in the next few days, he said.
The US-led coalition has been resisting pressure from Shia Muslims to hold direct elections before it transfers power to Iraqi leaders in June.

1. Will BushCo care what they decide?
It is a little too early to hold elections from their perspective. The US firms have not yet firmly established themselves in Iraq yet. A strong Iraqi leader may actually have a chance at removing them.

2. He has little choice but to care
Bush waged a colonial war against Iraq. He has found out what colonialism looks like in a post-colonial era. The natives aren't going to take it laying down.

Consequently, he either agrees to the UN bailing him out and ending up with an Iraqi government that is not as compliant to US interests as he had in mind when he got into this thing or he can continue to use half of the Army's combat divisions to subdue resistance for the foreseeable future.

Of course, it is dicey assume that Bush will make a rational choice.
