My Chemical Romance fans protest at 'suicide cult' label
Source: Observer

Kensington has never seen anything like it. Yesterday hundreds of fans of the US rock band My Chemical Romance marched on the offices of the Daily Mail in west London to protest at its portrayal of their lifestyle.

Sporting dyed black hair and dark clothing, they expressed their support for the 'emo' subculture whose origins lie in hardcore punk rock. Fans have taken umbrage with the paper's suggestion that emo, short for 'emotional hardcore', is a 'sinister cult' that encourages suicide.

They held placards proclaiming 'I am not afraid to keep on living' - lyrics from a song by My Chemical Romance. The Daily Mail defended its coverage of emo fans.

Nice to see that the Daily Mail are as much of a bunch of old farts as ever.

1. "suicide cult???"
What? The last album was actually pretty good. Very good, really.

Yes, it was about a young man dying, but it was about how he learns to face that fact.

It's not "pro-death" by any means.

4. Too funny. I took my 14-year-old to
see "My Chem" in LA last year, and other than a more intense than usual crush in the pit (which I avoided) it was no different from any other concert. The fans were a mix, too. Caught the group again as the closing act at Bamboozle Left recently and, again, they attracted a diverse crowd. The Daily Mail ought to stick to subjects it knows and not try to pontificate on defining kids by their clothes or hair. Just stupid.

6. is this really news?
but interestingly enough, it seems it is possible to get the youth to lay down their apathy and participate in some activism, all you have to do is insult some noise they listen to.

9. Pretentious and navel-gazing, yes. Suicidal? Probably not.
I've run across a lot of the black-clothes, black-hair-dye crowd at conventions. (And from that description you might guess that they look like Ronald Reagan back from the dead, but no.) They are amusing. A little pathetic. They make the folk that dress like Jedi and Storm Troopers seem positively jolly by comparison.

14. I knew Gerard Way in college.
Sexist drunken fool-- didn't even want to be a rock star, just did it as a side thing and got famous by falling into shit. I guess he went to rehab for his drunkenness though, good for him.
