Police say American driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep at wheel

MONTERREY, Mexico - A car plowed into a bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others.

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race Sunday, police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez said Monday.

A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing 37-year-old Alejandro Alvarez of Monterrey.

Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

4. I don't know how you guys and EMTs can take it
Back in the late 60s a guy racing a GTO slammed into a bridge abutment, so when I got out of my car to run over and help, it was apparent it was a useless cause.

The firewall of the Pontiac had curled back into the passenger compartment and cut the guy in half at his waist. I was nearly sickened by the sight, and it made me drive at 30 mph on the interstate the rest of the way home.

I realize you guys see this about every day, and my hat's off to you foks for being able to stomach it and go on everyday.

7. My 15 yr. old was in a wreck on Saturday
5 car pile up. drunk driver in the first cat just stopped and everyone plowed into each other. My kid got out of the car (3rd in 5) and a minute later the next car smashed theirs. She's banged and bruised but alive and will recover.

8. I've been right behind too many accidents ...

I've been right behind about 7 accidents as I can recall. I've seen 2 this year (one was immediately behind me). I do not stop exactly for this reason. I don't want the people behind me to slam into me. I swerve and keep on going. The pileup and resulting log jam can call for help.

2. I'd say it's at not less true that this is the kind of crap poor protection
for cyclists leads to. If the road had been closed for the event....

The sooner cars go away, the better.

3. Can you imagine the outrage if this had been an illegal in Cali?
BillO's head would explode.

But regarding protection, I doubt the Mexican authorities have much of an interest in that.

11. oh that is awful
Mexico seems to just now be embracing bikes for recreation. My most recent trip to Chihuahua was in mid April and I saw more bikes than I can remember. Not just poor people using for transportation, but people in bike costumes and such. Even saw a mountain bike track for racing (I think) - it was near a shooting range. Odd but then Mexico does have its quirks.

13. I've had it with "vehicular manslaughter" ...

I've had it with all these charges coming short of the effect of negligent actions ... killing. So for drunk drivers who kill ... they should get murder 2. And yes Laura Bush SHOULD be in jail for killing her ex-boyfriend with a car.
