Canada Reaches Free Trade, Labor Agreements With Colombia
Source: Bloomberg

By Ian McKinnon

(Bloomberg) -- Canada has reached a free trade agreement with Colombia to boost business between the countries.

Agreements on labor and environmental issues have also been reached, the government said yesterday in a statement posted on its Web site. Negotiations began last July.

The accords will ``improve market access'' for agricultural and industrial products as well as the provision of services, according to the statement. Trade between the two nations totaled C$1.14 billion ($1.12 billion) in 2007.

Canada has a similar trade agreement with Peru, the statement said.

3. Canada also has a similar treaty with Costa Rica...
Unlike CAFTA, this agreement was approved by all major parties in Costa Rica and had no major opposition.

Apparently, it has also worked well for both sides, although it was approved only about 3 years ago.

5. Free trade
I have no problem with free trade in concept, but these trade agreements ought to more about slashing tariffs and actually do something to enforce real wage and environmental standards.

7. They need to be FAIR
trade agreement.. I have no problem with nations with similar standards of living and wages ,but that is not what is happening. Nations participating should all share the same right to unionization and heath standards.. as it is now the 3rd world is LOL at the dumb US giving away their jobs, accepting sub standard meds. food and toys as we move down the ladder to the 3rd world status trading middle class jobs for cheaper I Pods.. shows where our values are

6. "Agreements on labor issues..." H-m-m. Body parts of labor leaders chainsawed
in Colombia will NOT glut the Canadian market for transplant organs, and will instead be thrown into mass graves in Colombia, as before, and human rights workers and journalists who investigate Colombian military and paramilitary atrocities, and who receive death threats, will be given the full protection of...um, the Colombian military.

Signed, sealed and delivered.

8. Colombia Deal Done Before Human Rights Study Complete
Embassy, June 11th, 2008

Colombia Deal Done Before Human Rights Study Complete
The controversial deal includes a $15-million fund the Colombian government will have to pay into for labour violations, including union member killings.
By Michelle Collins

The Conservative government unexpectedly announced on Saturday the conclusion of negotiations for a controversial free trade agreement with Colombia, even before a wide-ranging study on the implications a deal would have on human rights in the country was complete.

The announcement surprised observers and parliamentarians, including Commons' members of the trade committee who were due to complete their two-month long study this week.

The committee has invited numerous witnesses to appear before it and discuss the agreement, specifically its human rights and environmental implications. It also travelled to Colombia's capital, Bogotá, last month to observe the situation first-hand.

On Monday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper dismissed the notion the government jumbled its own priorities on human rights by moving ahead before the committee report was complete.

"I think there'd been a desire to conclude it for some time and the minister had sought my final sign-off in the last few days," Mr. Harper said. "I've made very clear, and our government has made very clear, our desire to sign a free trade agreement with Colombia, and to include in that agreement obviously measures related to the environment and labour."

Negotiations for a free trade agreement with Colombia began in July 2007 and have been met with fierce opposition in both Canada and the United States from critics who are concerned about Colombia's human rights, labour and environmental standards.

Similar concerns have been voiced about the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement, ratification of which has ground to a standstill in Congress after Democrats refused to fast-track it.

Opposition critics in Canada have accused Mr. Harper of co-ordinating foreign policy with U.S. President George W. Bush. They note Mr. Harper is using the same justification for a Canada-Colombia deal as the American president has for the U.S.-Colombia deal. In addition, the Canadian prime minister has been prodding American congressional representatives to approve the U.S. deal.
