Canadian Army told to quarantine US beef in Afghanistan
The Canadian Forces in Afghanistan have been told to quarantine tons of US beef that may eventually have to be destroyed because of fears over mad cow disease, it was reported here.

The quarantine order was issued by Canada's department of national defence after it was alerted to mad cow concerns by Canada's food inspection body.

3. and that might even be relevant
"Pot, meet kettle"

... if Canada had criticized the US in some way rather than simply taking appropriate action to protect the people serving it. It didn't, so I'm not seeing a point -- unless perhaps it was aimed at the overall Canada/US/mad cow situation, which wasn't the subject of this thread.

In view, particularly, of the deaths of several Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan this week, this might be one more place where I'd be overjoyed to see a little more respect and a little less USA-centrism and fewer cheap shots at the expense of those who have done nothing to deserve them.

4. I just meant in the overall mad cow picture
Perhaps I should have been more clear. I just meant it was ironic that the Canadian military was refusing beef from the U.S. on mad cow grounds, when Canadian beef is not subject to any more significantly serious scrutiny.

Perhaps I should have also mentioned that I am Canadian, from a city (Edmonton, Alberta) which is intimately involved in both the mad cow issue and the Afghanistan issue.

- the Canadian and U.S. cows that tested positive for mad cow both got feed from near here.
- the military base here is home to the PPCI, which has had the bulk of the Canadian casualties in Afghanistan.

I have a great deal of sympathy for both Canadian and American soldiers (and Afghan and Iraqi civilians) who have gotten caught up in the recent machinations of Bush, Bin Laden, and whatever other characters may be behind all this grief.
