Israeli apparently shoots self as Sarkozy departs
Source: Reuters

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - An Israeli soldier on the perimeter of a farewell airport ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy shot himself on Tuesday, causing a security stir but not endangering the visiting leader, Israel Radio said.

Television footage showed bodyguards hustling Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy into their plane at Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport while other security men surrounded Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and moved him quickly toward his car.

... Israel Radio said the soldier who was shot was stationed 100 meters to 200 meters (yards) away. Two women soldiers who witnessed the shooting were treated for shock, the radio said.

Israel's volunteer medical service Zaka said the soldier apparently committed suicide. But other media reports said he may have fainted from the heat, discharging his gun accidentally.

4. conflicting reports from Israeli media

http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/

Update at 10:09 a.m. ET: Haaretz says the soldier killed himself.

Reuters reports that the French leader's plane took off without further incident.

"Israel Radio said the soldier who was shot was stationed 100 metres to 200 metres (yards) away from the plane," the wire service says. "Two women soldiers who witnessed the shooting fainted and were treated by medics."

Update at 10:14 a.m. ET: The Associated Press says there are conflicting reports about this incident in the Israeli news media. Police sources tell the wire service that it didn't involve an assassination attempt.

MSNBC quotes an unidentified police source who says that a border policeman shot himself.

The Jerusalem Post reports that the IDF soldier "fell from a vantage point he was occupying on a high building and a bullet misfired from his gun."

YnetNews says on its website that the soldier is in critical condition. "The soldier, who was part of the honorary guard, was reportedly wounded when a gun misfired. The incident is under investigation," the publication says.

Update at 10:22 a.m. ET: AP is now quoting a police spokesman who says that a border policeman committed suicide during the departure ceremony.

guns go off on their own all the time. The slightest wrong nudge, and Kaboom!

But remember children, the NRA says guns don't kill people, people do!
