NY civil liberties group sues over FBI data on immigrants

NEW YORK (AP) - The U.S. government may have violated the privacy of more than 130,000 immigrants during an FBI program dubbed "Operation Darkening Clouds."

That's 1 of the claims in lawsuit brought yesterday by the New York Civil Liberties Union against the U.S. Justice Department.

NYCLU lawyers allege that federal authorities secretly gathered personal data on thousands of immigrants in the run-up to the war in Iraq. The NYCLU's lawsuit seeks more detail about how the information was gathered and used.

The NYCLU sued after the FBI rejected a Freedom of Information Act request to disclose more details about the program.
