160 Arrested in Immigration Raid at a Houston Plant
Source: NY Times

HOUSTON — Federal immigration agents arrested 160 employees on Wednesday in a raid on a used clothing and rag exporting plant.

The authorities said it was the largest workplace raid ever here. Most of those arrested were from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, officials said, and 70 percent of them were women.

It was the second major raid in Houston in just over two months. Federal agents arrested 20 workers at a Shipley Do-Nuts factory on April 16.

The roundup on Wednesday at Action Rags USA, which is just north of the Houston Ship Channel, began at 7 a.m. and was conducted by about 200 immigration agents, said Robert Rutt, special agent in charge of the Office of Investigations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Houston.

1) Biggest ICE raid stories lately also have underlying subtopic, union organization or worker's rights activity suppressed, and 2) since the targets were women, what's happening with the children?

This inquiring mind wants to know, since it was primarily women and we are talking about Texas, will ICE lock up the 'family' at Camp Hutto family detention center?

2. Gotta love Texas: the right to work state

And I bet the ICE will be locking up families.

I wonder what prompted the roundup? Perhaps Action Rags couldn't make payroll? Will Action Rags be penalized in any way?

Just wait until Action Rags catches on that he'd make more money putting prisoners to work than immigrants.

4. Maybe local unions tipped them off
That is what happened here when my father was getting the shit cut out of his wages and seeing all his friends getting laid off.

This is one area I don't get our party. We claim to be the party of unions, but then turn around and fist fuck them when it comes to illegal immigration. After all, "we (and my father) don't really want these jobs anyway."

7. We are a right to work state and have unions.
Sure, they don't have the power as in other states as the company CAN fire them all, the unions DO have power.

9. Where did you ever get that idea?
Not that it really matters so long as you understand it's wrong.

Right to Work laws are really more easily understood if you view them as a Right to Scab. They permit non-union workers to be used in such a way as to undermine the unions and weaken their power. Which in turn helps the business by weakening the power that their labor wields.

22. In essence, Right to Work laws in TX...
In essence, Right to Work laws in TX simply give the employer the legal recourse to fire any employee for any reason (other than discrimination).

11. Surprised? What was the comparison between the Clinton & Bush admins
record on fining employers for exploiting illegal workers?

I don't remember when I last saw the statistic, but it showed that this administration is pretty much allowing companies to do this with hardly even an occasional slap on the wrist.

10. IMMIGRATION RAID . . . .
Using illegal immigrants will continue unless the companies hiring them are prosecuted. This hiring practice is the modern day method of slavery . . . "Low to no pay brings higher profits!"

16. I'm curious as to how many of these arrests there've been in the last while
It seems once or twice a week I hear about a raid with one or two hundred people being arrested, and there's quite a few threads around here about teachers who walk into their classes one day to find a quarter of the students missing or somesuch. There's gotta be thousands upon thousands so far, and I'm kind of curious as to where they're winding up.

eta: But I notice it says "criminal immigration prosecutions" and am not clear if that means immigration law violaters -- it shouldn't -- or not. But, as this is BushWorld, it might.
