Gangs Increasing in Military, FBI Says
June 30, 2008
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

`snip`

Juwan Johnson of Baltimore, Md., willingly took a savage beating to join the Chicago-based gang Gangster Disciples. He was punched, kicked and stomped until he was barely conscious. After the beating, his new brothers put Johnson back in bed where he later died from his injuries.

This did not happen in a back alley of a gang-infested urban city. It took place at Kaiserslautern Army Base in Germany.

In 2005, the decorated 25-yearold Army sergeant was killed after completing a tour of Iraq because he wanted to join a gang -- one he found while in the military.

According to an FBI published report, "gang-related activity in the U.S. military is increasing and poses a threat to law-enforcement officials and national security."

2. When they lowered the standards to accept any warm body
And the leadership acts like a gang it's only logical that this would ensue.

13. This has been going on since the 90s
Gangs even sent people into the military to get ambush training, and so the scumbags would learn how to shoot instead of blasting up the entire street during drivebys.

There's a certain element of scum in every society.

16. the same thing
happened with LAPD and several other agencies that lowered standards, and this is well documented. Not surprisingly, gangs consider it an asset to have people inside the police. Gangs have specifically groomed certain members to stay out of trouble, so that they would make good applicants at a later date. Also, military, police, and other tactical training is highly prized in many street gangs, for obvious reasons. A person well versed in tactics is going to be MUCH more effective than your typical "pray and spray" street thug.

3. Is there any candidate out there who will take this on and make it a priority.
We need to clean up our own military where there are many, many bad actors and bad things happening...unrelated to Iraq. What Senator will have the balls to stand up and say this shit is wrong? Maybe John Kerry since he isn't running for a damn thing now? I would hope that someone like Webb would bring this kind of bullshit to the open and get moving on it.

6. Draft yes, too late, No!
Service to your country should be part of every citizens life. Weather in the military, or other type of service like VISA. It's not too much to give a mandatory two years of service to your country. Paid, of course, with benefits, sure, but mandatory none the less.

21. Maybe you're right, we're much better off with a
mercenary army. Loyal only to the organization and willing to kill anyone, anywhere, anytime they're told, without thought, with out rule of law, without regret. Yep, that's the USA where I want to be a citizen.

22. Actually more like preparation for service to corporations.
However, it's no longer necessary for the American workforce as most manufacturing jobs have moved offshore. Hence the drumbeat by the Rethugs to end the government funded free to every citizen, education system as it is no longer needed by their corporate masters. I hear complaints about taxes for education all the time mostly from wealthy people with huge homes complaining about their property tax.

Meeting recruiting goals was more important than getting quality people. Look what they got.

It's said;
"the US military is a reflection of its society"

Could be what the US side of the Mexican/Arizona border may look and act like some day.
Or any warring drug route imo

17. wow...he was 25? he was certainly old enough to know better
i can sort of see the 17-18 year olds interested in gangs, but come on -- the appeal has to wear off as you mature...i've heard before about gangs sending people to the military for weapons/combat expertise...the circle of violence sadly never stops; it just morphs into different forms...

so he survived Iraq just to die from a gang initiation? i'm sure his parents LOVED getting that letter in the mail...so does he get a military funeral or a gang one?
