Cheney wanted Congressional testimony on climate change cut, ex-EPA official says
Source: CNN/AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney's office pushed for major deletions in congressional testimony on the public health consequences of climate change, fearing the presentation by a leading health official might make it harder to avoid regulating greenhouse gases, a former EPA official maintains.

When six pages were cut from testimony on climate change and public health by the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last October, the White House insisted the changes were made because of reservations raised by White House advisers about the accuracy of the science.

But Jason K. Burnett, until last month the senior adviser on climate change to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson, says that Cheney's office was deeply involved in getting nearly half of the CDC's original draft testimony removed.

"The Council on Environmental Quality and the office of the vice president were seeking deletions to the CDC testimony (concerning) ... any discussions of the human health consequences of climate change," Burnett has told the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee....

9. Cheney's office tried to alter greenhouse gas testimony, former official says
Source: Los Angeles Times

By Richard Simon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
7:38 PM PDT, July 8, 2008

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney's office worked to alter sworn congressional testimony provided by a federal official in order to play down the threat of global warming and head off regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, a former government official said in a new accusation Tuesday.

Jason K. Burnett, a former Environmental Protection Agency official, cited the behind-the-scenes efforts by unnamed officials in Cheney's office in a letter to congressional investigators regarding testimony in January by his former boss, EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson.

Burnett appeared at a news conference Tuesday with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who said his statements could boost efforts by California and other states to implement their own vehicle emission standards over White House opposition. Boxer plans to call Burnett to testify later this month before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which she chairs.

His charges are likely to give Bush administration critics new ammunition in their efforts to portray executive-branch actions on the environment as driven by politics, rather than science.

13. Obviously from the Reagan era onward the policy has been
to make us dependent on oil and debate and study and debate and study some more until we come to a critical max and cave into their ultimate goal of total control through off-shore drilling and new nuclear power plants. Those in power have succeeded brilliantly.

16. "Cheney's office accused of editing climate change testimony": Shocked
Shocked am I, and surprised at such a scurrulous lie.

Of course, it is just the libeleral press saying things like:

From: http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/07/09/america/09enviro.php

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's office was involved in removing statements on health risks posed by global warming from a draft of a health official's Senate testimony last year, a former senior government environmental official said on Tuesday.

The former official, Jason Burnett, made the assertion and described similar incidents in a three-page letter to Senator Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat who is the chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. He then stood with her at a news conference at which she excoriated the Bush administration.

"History will judge this Bush administration harshly for recklessly covering up a real threat to the people they are supposed to protect," Boxer said...

Screw HISTORY: Is it not time people like Senator Boxer held these criminals to account? But they won't - just hand-wringing photo-ops next to the rare person with the courage to tell the truth.

19. Cheney tried to alter climate change testimony, says official
Source: Guardian UK

The new row is over testimony on climate change given last October by the head of the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC). It was cut from 14 to six pages.

When CDC officials anonymously told the media that the White House had "eviscerated" the document, removing any mention of specific diseases caused by pollution, a spokeswoman for Bush said the deletions were made to reflect scientific uncertainty on the issue.

But Burnett, 31, who resigned last month after the EPA blocked California from setting strong emissions limits, said the deletions were ordered to "keep options open" for the agency to deny that climate change endangers public health in response to a supreme court ruling.

"We know that the administration's efforts have been about covering up the real dangers of global warming and hiding the facts from the public," said Barbara Boxer, a Democratic senator and chairwoman of the environment committee, who received Burnett's letter. "This cover-up is being directed from the White House and the office of the vice-president."
