Fugitive spammer dies in murder-suicide
Source: MSNBC/AP

BENNETT, Colo. - A convicted spammer and his wife, who were being sought after she helped him escape prison, were found slain along with their young daughter Thursday in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said.

A teenage girl was shot in the neck and a baby was found unhurt in a car seat inside the vehicle where the three bodies were found, Arapahoe County undersheriff Mark Campbell said. The relationship between the girl, baby and the escaped convict wasn't immediately clear.

The bodies of "Spam King" Edward "Eddie" Davidson, his wife, and 3-year-old daughter were found in an SUV parked in a farmhouse driveway in a rural part of Bennett, about 25 miles east of Denver. Authorities said Davidson was the apparent gunman.

"What a nightmare, and such a coward," U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said. "Davidson imposed the 'death penalty' on family members for his own crime."

Authorities had been searching for them since Sunday, when the couple drove away from a minimum-security federal prison in Florence, 90 miles south of Denver.

1. What do you expect from a spammer?
It's horrible that he had to take others with him.

4. this is rediculous for two reasons
First, killing others because you're going to suicide is the worst stupidity I can imagine short of being George Bush.

Second, it never should have happened because I don't care how many millions of dollars the guy might have screwed people out of, if all he did was spam, he didn't deserve prison. Permanent ban from all computers fine, but prison.. any prison... it's rediculous.

These people died because he's a coward but also because the world is screwed up.

When are the companies who paid him going to be brought up on charges?

5. How do you enforce a permanent ban from all computers?
I think prison is an appropriate punishment for fraud, and that is very much what these spam kings engage in.

10. Oh, he deserved jail time.
"From 2005 through part of 2006, he sent thousands of e-mails from his home in Bennett, sometimes with false information, on behalf of a Houston company promoting a penny stock as an excellent investment, according to a plea agreement. His bank account deposits from 2003 to 2006 totaled $3.5 million, the plea agreement said."

Fraudster pump and dumpers should be locked up.

18. On this I disagree,
prison is the only thing that will dissuade these people. These crimes are premeditated, cold, and calculating. Personally, I am very much in favor of harsh punishment for these types of crime because it is more appropriate. For example, if buying alcohol for a minor resulted in a five year (no parole) sentence, you would find damn few people willing to accommodate teens. Likewise, rioters who decide they can trash the town because "their team" won.

We are not talking about crimes of "passion", or crimes by the mentally ill. Here we are talking about people who know better, breaking the law.

You've obviously never been the victim of spammers. I've been fighting spam for fucking years, and if had been up to me, he would have gotten a lot stiffer sentence.

Wow. He only had a 21 month sentence. I not saying prison is easy, but he should've been able to make it 21 months. And what a cowardly weasel to kill his wife and child.

11. Probably more to it....
They will probably find that his life was in danger in prison, making promises to unscrupulous people who backed him and then rolling over on them to get a 21 month sentence. Escaping his wife and he, picked up a hitchhiker and her baby to make the number of persons in the car not match the APB.

However the folks who wanted him dead found him and they killed them all except the baby. The girl was a witness and a unfortunate innocent bystander.

YOu can bet there is more into this than suicide.

13. it does seem like an odd choice...
why would someone in his situation kill himself unless he was cornered by the authorities? and even then- he had less than 2 years to serve in a minimum security prison(although i'm pretty sure that would have changed some after the escape)...why run and then kill yourself over that...?

it will be interesting to hear what the teenager has to say.

19. Missing 'spam king' kills self, family
Source: Denver Post

BENNETT — Just four days after escaping a federal minimum-security work camp, "Spam King" Eddie Davidson shot his wife and child and wounded a teen-age girl before turning the gun on himself.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of gunfire in the small plains town of Bennett at about 11:15 a.m. today and found Davidson, 29-year-old Amy Lee Ann Hill and their 3-year-old daughter shot to death.

Davidson's most recent spam business, Power Promoters, was based in Bennett.

Arapahoe County Undersheriff Mark Campbell said the bodies were found laying near a Toyota Sequoia SUV in the driveway. Davidson's body was beside the driver's door, a pistol nearby, and his wife's body fell near the passenger side.

29. DS1 is right.
I have been an active anti-spammer for many years. I have actually met a few notorious spammers online, some of them nice, some of them not so nice. I even visited one spammer's facility in Westminster (the real Spam King - Scott Richter - never heard of Eddie) and asked for access. Unfortunately I was denied access but I got a pretty good idea of how he set it up.

Later Scott Richter was indicted...

21 months in federal prison or kill myself and my family...21 months in federal prison or kill myself and my family.

I'll take the 21 months, Alex. Innocent people have endured decades of "f&ck-me-in-the-ass" prisons, but this joker is so despondent over 21 months in the less dangerous federal prisons that he has to kill himself....AND his family?

Now I can understand why he chose such a pathetic line of work. May their souls rest in peace.

32. Could someone tell me why
spam/malware is still legal?

I really do not understand why these companies are not shut down and the owners/backers put in jail?
I am sure it has something to do with the amount of money they generate, but are they really giving it to politicians?
Some may say that it is a problem with defining "spam" or "malware", but that could easily be resolved. If I don't ask to receive email from you then you or anyone affiliated with you cannot send me email(I, basically, already do this with most of my email accounts). If you sell my email address to someone you will be shutdown.

And malware is anything installed on my pc that I did not "ok".

I run peerguardian 2 on my pc and it is amazing how many sites are setup to just harvest user information. When you go to break.com to see that viral video going around the internet, Savvis Inc. grabs as much info about you as possible.

I have worked online for the past 8 years and I really don't understand the logic behind letting companies that prey on the internet-ignorant exist and prosper....g00gle I am looking at what you have become.

This is just like any other grand theft from people, why does it make it hard for some people to realize it is a crime. Stealing large amounts of money is just that, whether you are a bank robber (gun), Enron (accountants) or spammmer (computer).
