AA makes emergency landing at JFK
Source: Crain's New York Business

An American Airlines jet made an emergency landing Monday at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after one of its two engines lost power. Airline officials said there were no injuries.

The MD-80 took off from LaGuardia airport bound for Atlanta, but the crew immediately noticed they did not have full power, an American spokesman said.

...snip...

Both the engine and engine debris found on the runway at LaGuardia will be examined to determine the cause of the failure.

...snip...

It was not clear when the American jet had its last major maintenance inspection. The airline spokesman said the engine failure was not related to the grounding of American's MD-80 fleet this spring to correct the packing of electrical wires.

1. Since airlines want to charge for coffee and pillows, lord knows
they must be cutting back on safety too.

2. that's been my worry
I only fly European airlines, they're better run organizations. Sorry for saying that, but at least I know my plane will be service rather than giving the CEO a golden parachute.

5. All the US airlines should be nationalized.........
The government COULDN'T run them any worse than the knuckle-heads currently doing the job! Only the people running SouthWest Airlines seem to have ever taken a business course.

Sometimes I think the airlines and automotive industry are running their businesses into the ground on purpose so they can file bankruptcy and get out from under those employee pension plans.

20. Please don't say "airlines" and

"running...into the ground" in the same sentence.... :scared:

But, yes, I think nationalizing would have to be an improvement. It's worked elsewhere, and it could work here.

Sorta like universal health coverage. And people voting for their national leaders...

27. Only If It Were Some Other Government Taking Them Over
BushCo's regime couldn't organize a beer run without mayhem, death and crimes against humanity.

28. Oh, I wouldn't trust the * admin to be able to plan a picnic........
But if he can win the election in November, I would hope someone would make President Obama aware of the nationalization option for these greedy, fiscally irresponsible industries.

The fear of being nationalized should keep any CEO from running his/her company into the ground.

25. I'm really sorry, but I don't see your point
What does a collision have to do with the way the airline is actually run? Most collisions are caused by human error, either the pilots or the airport controller and nothing at all to do with the airline itself.

Now, if the wing fell off a Lufthansa airline, I might be able to see your point, but this accident doesn't make your point.

24. I would definitely agree... the only US company I have flown
that hasn't hit the wall (so to speak) is Delta. Even they do have delays and baggage screwups though.

Of course, European carriers often have the worst partners. My Lufthansa flights to the US this year netted me far too much face time with United.

The worst part... a 6hr catering delay in Chicago. :grr: They couldn't get the food on the freakin' plane outbound to Frankfurt.

3. "Passengers, we have determined that an emergency landing is necessary.
Flight attendants are now coming down the aisle to collect the $50 fee necessary to pay for this extra service. We will not be able to proceed until every passenger has paid. Thank you."

21. I wonder if they'd accept a triple-A card

in lieu of the fee?

If we were within five miles of the terminal, it could get us a free tow and runwayside service.

16. No...
Sometimes when engines fail they can spit parts out...I fly C-130s and I've shut down or had an engine fail about 5 times in the past 4 years. Of course, we have 4 engines...so less to worry about...but nearly all modern airliners can easily fly around on one engine (well, I mean all 2 engined airliners...the 4 engine aircraft like the 747 would have a bad day if it was flying around on 1).

8. AA Jet Evacuated After Emergency Landing at LAX
Passengers are being evacuated by inflatable chutes from an American Airlines jetliner after an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport.

Firefighters were on hand Tuesday to help passengers as they slid down two emergency chutes aboard the plane. The airport reports smoke was detected in the cabin before the landing.

Thank god for the courage and skill of the pilots in these situations. They deserve commendations.

it could be that the engine injested something like a large bird.
