GOP Leaders Request Special Session
Source: CBS News

By Martin Kady II

CBS News
Aug 7, 2008

(The Politico) Every House Republican leader has signed a letter today calling on Speaker Nancy Pelosi to open a special session of the House to deal with the oil price crisis.

Pelosi is highly unlikely to cave in to this request as House Republicans open their fifth day in a row taking her name in vain and giving floor speeches during a fake session of the House.

In the letter, Republican leaders ask Pelosi to "reconvene the House and allow a vote on a comprehensive, common-sense approach to reducing the price of energy."

The Crypt asked Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) if the GOP was in any negotiations on a compromise energy package, and Blunt said he was in negotiations with Democrats like Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii), who backs more offshore drilling, but there are no formal negotiations between congressional leaders who actually set the floor schedule.

Several Republicans continue to raise the threat of a government shutdown this fall if the annual government funding resolution doesn't lift the outer continental shelf drilling moratorium. Blunt says that issue "is going to be up to the Democrats," but Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) says if the drilling prohibition isn't lifted, "I don't care what shuts down.

8. Totally a theatrical move.
Thousands of acres of plots untapped.

Continental shelf wells produce in ten years

Any oil they find will be auctioned on the world market.

Effect on gas price almost nil and that would be after 10 or 11 years.

Irreparable damage to priceless coast lines.

Increase profits for the oil companies.

Hmm. Not a geologist, but would taking the offshore oil increase earthquakes in already earthquake prone areas (such as California)?

Google search indicates answer is yes.

So, who pays for any additional earthquake damage? Oh, that's right, earthquakes are caused by "Acts of 'God'". Never the oil biz, and even if so, that part of biz costs are to be "subsidized" by the public, or the people they impact, only the profits from oil are privatized.

6. Where are the Republicans to tell us that the market will make the
correction. Suddenly, within 100 days of an election, they decide to help the market out.

12. Let the republicans hold their breath until election day and make
...this a Big Oil issue to monopolize supply so future prices would go even higher. That's total bullshit!

No new drilling until the current oil leases have been fully explored and reserses identified. We know the oil is there, it is a matter of who controls it and benefits from it and it shoulkd not just be Big Oil making massive profits

14. There was sworn testimony earlier that up to 70% of the increased
prices in oil futures was created by speculation. This was given by
persons involved in the industry and academia. Further, a prominent
oil industry operative has told us "we cannot drill our way out of
this problem." Now a bunch of politicians, throwing a temper tantrum
because they are no longer in charge, expect us to believe they have
a solution to the problem. After having been in the majority for fourteen
years and completely in charge for the past 7 years and doing nothing
to solve this problem. Surely it is not possible that the electorate
would continue to support any of these persons who continue to mouth
unworkable and idiotic "energy legislation" that does nothing to solve
this problem.
