U.S.-led coalition: 5 Afghan civilians killed (1 coalition service member also dead)

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The military says U.S.-led coalition forces have "inadvertently" killed four women and a child during a clash that also left several militants dead in central Afghanistan.

A coalition service member is also dead after a roadside blast in the nation's west.

Civilian deaths are a sore point between the Afghan government and foreign troops here. Afghan President Hamid Karzai continues to plead with the U.S. and NATO to avoid killing innocents, which undermines already tenuous popular support for his government. Military officials point out that insurgents often hide in civilian-heavy areas.
