Poland fires missile defense negotiator
Source: AP

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk dismissed the official leading talks with Washington on placing part of a U.S. missile defense system in the country, saying Monday his performance was not satisfactory.

. . .

Tusk said he dismissed Waszczykowski because «we were not satisfied with the way he led the negotiations, especially in the final stage. Tusk also said he was angry at an interview that Waszczykowski gave to a news magazine in which he criticized the prime minister for his stance in the negotiations.

Last month, Tusk rejected as «unsatisfactory» the latest U.S. offer aimed at getting Poland to accept the missile defense base. Tusk said at the time the proposal fell short of strengthening Poland's security, and stressed that Warsaw needed U.S. assurances of short-and medium-range anti-missile systems, including a Patriot missile battery, to shore up its own defenses.

Waszczykowski, on the other hand, was a strong supporter of the idea of having the U.S. base in Poland and it appeared that he was too easygoing during the negotiations for Tusk's liking.

Poland's negotiator agreeing to terms where the US gets everything and Poland gets nothing, so the negotiator is fired.

What took Poland so long?

6. At least they didn't screw it up by saying "Poland dismisses..."
That would have sucked.

5. Poland was playing with fire
For the good of its citizens, it is about time they stopped and took a good look around at reality.

4. The apparent agreement seemed odd
allowing for the fact that Tusk had already declared that Poland wasn't at that point prepared to agree. I guess the truth has now come out. I doubt that it is associated with the current issues in Georgia - more likely that he'd already figured that Poland was completely out of range of Iran and was happier to follow the mood of his population.
