U.S. troops still in Georgia
Source: Stars and Stripes

U.S. personnel responsible for training members of the Georgian military remain stationed inside the volatile country, where fighting erupted Friday between Russia and Georgia over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.

The U.S. European Command said on Monday that there were no plans at this time to withdraw the U.S. military trainers from the country. There are still 127 U.S. trainers in Georgia, where the American forces had been preparing the Georgian army for operations in Iraq.

Meanwhile, U.S. civilians started to make their way out of the country over the weekend, according to the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi.

Convoys carrying family members of diplomats, government workers and ordinary citizens bound for the embassy in neighboring Armenia continued on Monday.

2. Wow
"Regarding the military personnel, EUCOM stated that they are not engaged in the conflict and are removed from where the fighting is happening.

In addition to the trainers, 1,000 soldiers from the Vicenza, Italy-based Southern European Task Force (Airborne) and the Kaiserslautern-based 21st Theater Sustainment Command, along with Marine reservists with the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines out of Ohio, and the state of Georgia’s Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry recently participated in "Immediate Response 2008."

That exercise, which had the U.S. troops operating from Vaziani, concluded on Thursday. That base, near the capital of Tbilisi, was bombed by Russian aircraft over the weekend, Georgian officials said."

3. Tripwire?
Don't these troops become a sort of tripwire now, so that U.S. and or NATO can be pulled into the war at Bush's discretion?

4. tripwire, if it is I hope ole dick&b**S know we couldn't win a war with russia
even if we did hold up in a war in the end it would end in a nuclear Holocaust on both sides:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

5. Withdrawing them from a friendly country in time of trouble would
completely and utterly damage what credibility the U.S. has left in the world.

They'll stay put until the Russians take over, then high-tail it out.

I don't think that they'll be used as a trip-wire. There may be cooler heads in the military here and with our allies than we have in the White House and the Naval Observatory. Shrub and Darth are lame ducks, remember.

8. Let's hope the military doesn't have to refuse orders from the Commander in Chief
Although, it would be best if they did in these circumstances. A rerun of WWI, with nukes, wouldn't be healthy.

12. I'm not ruling out the possibility that both sides were itching for a fight,
and that it wouldn't have taken much to get things going.

I'll be interested what comes out once the smoke clears.

Right now, I think that much of the news is really propaganda from one side or another.

13. We would win, but you're right it would be a nuclear holocaust
We have much more nukes and more powerful nukes than they do.

9. Thanks, the last line is nothing to be proud of:
"Whatever the truth of these reports, when this war comes to its (hopefully imminent) conclusion, the United States may find that both sides feel stabbed in the back."

Another epic fail for America under Bush**. It's horrifying to reflect on how far down the septic pipe he's been allowed to drag this country and democracy in general.
