InterfaxMOSCOW. Aug 11 (Interfax) - Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council International Affairs Committee Vasili Likhachyov has spoken for convening an emergency meeting of the Federal Assembly.
"The situation is calling for an emergency session of the Federal Assembly. This is a situation when both chambers - the Federation Council and the State Duma - must get together and work out a constructive consolidated resolution on the current developments in South Ossetia and Georgia's armed aggression against the republic," he said in an interview with Interfax.
Likhachyov said that the international community which judging by Western media reports is at crossroads and lacks the political will for an impartial analysis should hear the voice of the Russian parliamentary community.
The senator said that there is every reason to raise the question of recognizing the independent status of the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia given the logic of the latest developments and the fact that "from the viewpoint of the right of people to self- determination these territories are fully-fledged parties to international relations."
