YORK, Pennsylvania (AFP) — Republican White House hopeful John McCain Tuesday stepped up a fusillade against Russian "aggression" and declared that today, "we are all Georgians."

Addressing voters in Pennsylvania, McCain said he had spoken by telephone earlier with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who he said wanted to thank the American people for their support.

"I told him that I know I speak for every American when I say to him, today, we are all Georgians," said the Republican, a hardliner against Russia who wants the mighty nation expelled from the Group of Eight club.

"It is past time for the Russian government to immediately sign and implement a ceasefire," Obama, who is on vacation in Hawaii, said in his latest statement on the crisis.

"Russia must halt its violation of Georgian airspace and withdraw its ground forces from Georgia, with international monitors to verify that these obligations are met," the Illinois senator said.

Obama gave me a lot of hope with his nuanced statement about the Georgia/Russia battles. It reminded me of days of yore, when the US was actually called upon to mediate and had standing in international negotiations. I look forward to the Obama administration rebuilding cordial international relations that are so necessary in the 21st Century, with complex ecological clean-up urgently required. We need careful cooperation over the long term rather than explosive force and chaotic dominance.

We need the warmongers to step back and figure out how to get on board with the timeline for withdrawing US troops from Iraq. There is a lot of planning required. I would expect any self-respecting pro-invasion official to be busy figuring out how to clean things up on the way out. Lots of planning regarding what kind of U.S. shell remains.

The day of the call, a lobbying firm partly owned by the adviser, Randy Scheunemann, signed a $200,000 contract to continue providing strategic advice to the Georgian government in Washington.
