(Condi) Rice to Russia: 'This is not 1968'
Source: USA Today

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has become the latest administration official to lay down strong words about the Russia-Georgia conflict.

"This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can threaten a neighbor, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it," she said at a State Department news conference this afternoon.

"I have heard the Russian president say that his military operations are over. I am saying it is time for the Russian president to be true to his word," Rice said.

1. So what if he doesn't listen? What she's gonna do about it?
We have nothing to back up those words. Idiots.

29. Nothing. Russia is in a win/win sitch. W Euros won't do anything, US can't
Russians have already figured out that when you control the oil and the gas, soft power = no power. So they could care less about a few indignant sputterings. UN won't do anything either. Russia also has seen that the West will supply far more self-critics than Russian critics.

Putin smiles, with his right hand on the kill-switch for Europe's winter fuel. It's *good* to be king.

"...where the U.S. can threaten a country, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it," she said at a State Department news conference this afternoon.

Well, two countries actually.

32. Not quite
Actually we invaded Granada, Panama, Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq and more all for no good reason. On the other hand Russia did not invade Georgia but rather repelled the invasion of Osettia, and the murder of it's people as well as Russian peace keepers by Georgia. Quite different IMO. Bob

34. I know I didn't state it in the above post but I have been arguing the same point about Russia
The point of this post is to point out the hypocrisy in what she was saying, even from her point of view.

11. If it wasn't such a dire situation, it's comical to hear a Bushie lecturing about invading nations.

I really think conservatives are devoid of any sense of hypocrisy.

They slam Democrats on their sexual encounters while they're dumping their wives for rich girls half their age. In some cases, several times.

They blather on about "tax and spend" liberals while their presidents run up the national debt at record paces.

They bitch about big government while bloating their bureaucracies with unqualified cronies.

They mock Democratic candidates' military record while propping up AWOLs, chicken hawks and bottom feeders who crash planes more times than most people buy new cars in their lifetime.

They bitch about the 'liberal media' while listening to their daily dose of Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and others. Like the liberals have such a selection.

They project economic catastrophe if a Democrat wins the White House when their party gave us the Great Depression and several other recessions since then.

Had enough?

28. It is a mindset where evidence and truth simply don't matter
This is a feature of fascism as well. They make their own reality, until reality finally intrudes and brings the entire thing crashing down.

13. I heard about this on NPR on the way home...
and this administration has no credibility...they blew it w/their BS for invading Iraq. Gotta hand it to them though...since reality sucks, they found a very gracious fantasy world..
I believe all war sucks, (although occasionally inevitable and justified); if bush hadn't been so war happy, he might have a guiding principle to go by, but the world is laughing at this administration for this, while weeping for the Georgians.

"This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can threaten a neighbor, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it," she said at a State Department news conference this afternoon.

She had better hope that's something you can get away with. If not at the very least she's going to jail and possibly even the gallows.

17. Somebody, as some point, has to shut these people up.
Have they not done enough damage yet? Why do we still have to listen to this self-serving dissembling and childish twaddle? At what point do we admit these fools have failed? Can we get somebody that lives in the real world to replace them? Soon?
