Mugabe rival 'barred from travel'
Source: BBC

Zimbabwe's main opposition party says authorities have confiscated travel documents from its leader and other officials ahead of a regional summit.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said the documents were taken at the airport in the capital, Harare.

MDC leaders were due to travel to South Africa this weekend after power-sharing talks in Zimbabwe were adjourned.

The BBC's Jonah Fisher in Johannesburg says MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and two senior colleagues were planning to fly to South Africa for talks with President Thabo Mbeki, who has been the chief mediator at the negotiations.

It's one way to completely screw the other side you're meant to be negotiating with - stop them turning up to the talks.

1. Sadly, I think the only way to resolve this is going to be civil war or Mugabe's untimely death.
Hope it's the latter.

Even with neighboring countries applying pressure (aka massing troops at the border) Mugabe still wont give in.

2. I think you are right.
I think travel documents are the least of his opponents worries. They and their families will probably be dead before long.

3. I'm surprised he hasn't been killed already to be honest.

4. His inability to attend the meeting is the least of it...
The worst is that he won't be able to flee easily if (when) things become truly dangerous.

5. Things are already truly dangerous
Anyone who is a threat to Mugabe's continuing in power, is in a LOT of danger.

I'm only surprised he has remained alive this long.

6. Mugabe rival 'gets passport back'
Zimbabwe's main opposition party says authorities have returned the travel documents of its leader and other officials ahead of a regional summit.
