Costumed workers taken away in handcuffs by cops after labor protest

A demonstrator dressed as Peter Pan is arrested during a protest over Disney's treatment of hotel workers outside of Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Cinderella, Snow White, Tinkerbell and other fictional fixtures of modern-day childhood were handcuffed, frisked and loaded into police vans Thursday at the culmination of a labor protest that brought a touch of reality to the Happiest Place on Earth.

The arrest of the 32 protesters, many of whom wore costumes representing famous Disney characters, came at the end of an hour-long march to Disneyland's gates from one of three Disney-owned hotels at the center of a labor dispute.

No sick pay for some workers?
But Disney now wants to eliminate the free health plan for new hires and wants to create a new class of workers who put in less than 30 hours a week, said Briceno. Those part-time workers would receive no sick or vacation pay and not be given holidays, she said.

Two-tier wage system?
The workers' contract expired in February and their union says Disney's latest proposal makes health care unaffordable for hundreds of employees and creates an unfair two-tier wage system. The union also says Disney wants to create a new category of part-time employees who would receive greatly reduced benefits.

"The other hotels around the area all have health care that is provided by the boss and have been able to get wage increases," said Ada Briceno, president of Unite Here Local 681, which represents the workers.

"At the other hotels in the same classification, for the same work, the workers get paid $2 to $3 an hour more."

I totally support the workers, don't mean to make light of that, but really, it is humorous.

6. Actually local amusement parks are doing great

The one in my town is raking it in and having record attendence. The reason being people can spend a two day trip at the local ones and call it the family vacation for that year. The tourist meccas like Orlando are feeling the squeeze though because most of their business is from large distances who make it a week long vacation. I.E. Drive or fly there.

13. We were planning a Disney vacation next fall, but given the state of things...
... we're going to have our 10th wedding anniversary locally. Its a bunch cheaper all around to drive 3 hours to the Dells for a year-round resort than it is to Fly to Orlando and all that.

Maybe after years of Democrats fixing things we'll be able to take that fancy vacation. Time will tell.

15. My Grandfather made money inthe depression............
{honestly} by selling cheap wall paper, mail order. Guess those who couldn't afford a vacation stayed home & fixed up the house a bit.
I have peeled off 4 layers of our designs, ( I remember from the 40's) from my kitchen in Maine!

16. I'm in Orlando.Business is up because the dollar is weak overseas
so things are really crowded here. Disney is cutting back everywhere, though, because operating costs are up (thanks, BushCo).

25. in our area, santa's village closed a year too early...
had they been able to last until this summer and the outrageous gas prices- they probably could have done pretty well.
way back when i was in high school, i was a costume character(billy the beaver) at santa's village. it was an AWESOME job- one of my favourite things to do would be to ride the rides in costume- they always let you jump the line, and mostly the customers loved it.

5. I wouldn't want to stay in a hotel whose workers...
don't have basic health care and aren't allowed sick days. I would consider staying there to be unhealthy. Thankfully the protesters have made us aware of the issue. Another case of a corporation hurting itself by working against labor.

7. Have you been to jail for justice?
...then you're a friend of mine!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j2h3EZcfro

LYRICS

Was it Cesar Chavez, maybe it was Dorothy Day
Some will say Dr. King and Gandhi sent them on their way
No matter who your mentors are it's pretty plain to see
If you've been to jail for justice, you're in good company

Have you been to jail for justice?
I wanna shake your hand
Oh sittin' in and lyin' down are ways to take a stand
Have you sung a song for freedom, or marched that picket line?
Have you've been to jail for justice?
O you're a friend of mine.

You law-abiding citizens, listen to my song
Laws were made by people, and people can be wrong
Once unions were against the law but slavery was fine
Women were denied the vote and children worked the mines

Yeah, the more you study history, the less you can deny it
A rotten law stays on the books 'til folks with guts defy it

Have you been to jail for justice?
I wanna shake your hand
Oh sittin' in and lyin' down are ways to take a stand
Have you sung a song for freedom, or marched that picket line?
Have you've been to jail for justice?
Have you've been to jail for justice?
Will you go to jail for justice?
Then you're a friend of mine.

8. Gitmo is not the "Island of Lost Boys."
As I recall, Union membership has been declared a threat to national security--I think that is how they eliminated the AFSCME local at Homeland Security.

Poor Peter Pan may be headed off to the Island of Lost Hope charged with being a threat to national security...

19. let me remember the joke... Mickey and Minnie were getting a divorce
Edited on Fri Aug-15-08 02:24 PM by superconnected
and the judge said, "Mickey, you can't divorce Minnie because she's crazy."
And Mickey said, "I didn't say she's crazy, I said she's fucking Goofy."

Okay, so even tinkerbell got frisked here. She should have told everyone the police were a wendy bird and had them shot down.

20. Plastic handcuffs? Those are tie wraps.
"Those who were arrested sat in a circle on a busy intersection outside the park holding hands until they were placed in plastic handcuffs and led to two police vans while hundreds of hotel workers cheered and chanted."

And point out that Disney is part of the Republican media machine.

They deserve better than the average pay. Those folks bend over backwards to accomodate people's requests, and do so with a smile.
