Bill Would End Ban on Photos of Returning Military Dead
Source: PDNOnline

The Department of Defense would be required to grant journalists access to ceremonies honoring fallen military personnel under a bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The legislation is significant because it would, for the first time since Vietnam, let photojournalists capture the powerful images of flag-draped caskets arriving on American soil during wartime.

This week the bill won the endorsement of the National Press Photographers Association.

The Fallen Hero Commemoration Act, or H.R. 6662, was introduced July 30 by Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-N.C.), a member of the House Committee on Armed Services.

The bill states: "The Secretary of Defense shall grant access to accredited members of the media at military commemoration ceremonies and memorial services conducted by the Armed Forces for members of the Armed Forces who have died on active duty and when the remains of members of the Armed Forces arrive at military installations in the United States." It was referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

3. Time to reverse Bush's reality rewrite. Americans deserve more respect
than Bush is willing to pay as a bogus leader.

Good way to start removing his poisonous tentacles from our society by stripping away his ability to hide the suffering he causes from the country's awareness.

4. Well in fairness he did not start it (the bannings) a prior administration
Edited on Fri Aug-15-08 05:26 PM by cstanleytech
did.
I never agreed with it though and never understood why the army agreed to it since they all are supposedly sworn to uphold the constitution part of which involves freedom of speech and the press.

13. That prior administration was George H.W. Bush's administration
Clinton rescinded Bush 41's ban then George W. Bush reinstated the ban his father's administration began.

Those Bushes just can't deal with the reality thing.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/236385_newthomas14.html

The Pentagon had issued a ban on all photos showing military caskets in 1991. The ban was apparently prompted by then-Defense Secretary Dick Cheney who wanted to prevent a repetition of split-screen TV pictures like those in 1989 that showed President H.W. Bush laughing and joking about the swift victory in the U.S. attack on Panama, at the same time that an Air Force transport plane was unloading caskets at Dover.

The White House was furious about the televised contrast.

26. Welcome
Bush can't handle the reality of how these photos will effect the American people. When you see the caskets on the news every night, the public will to continue the war will diminish. Two things ended the viet nam war, an honest press and the draft.

Sponsored by a repug, folks.

This is groundwork for 2012.

Elect Obama, and then hitherto unseen consequences of Bush's war become available, courtesy of the media which has been sweeping the cost of war under the rug.

If this becomes law, the remains of fallen soldiers will never reach "military installations in the United States." The maladmini$tration would rather leave bodies to rot in the Iraqi desert than comply with this bill, should it become law. :grr:

12. The ban was never justified
The release of pictures of the coffins of soldiers does not hurt the US in any aspect. On the contrary, it serves as a reminded of what the effects of the immoral, unjustified, war in Iraq.

30. PRECISLEY!
Hiding the results of Bush's fiasco doesn't change those results one bit. It just makes it easier for barbarian war profiteers like Bush and Cheney to get away with it.

I remember seeing photos at the beginning of Bush's Iraq genocide that showed refrigerated trailers full of the bodies of Bush's victims. Women and children frozen because the morgues couldn't keep up with Bush's carnage. I suggested on a public forum that those trailers should be delivered to Bush in his Oval Office so he could see the results of his unwarranted, unprovoked attack on the people of Iraq. Needless to say, I was excoriated for saying so.

Now all the news we get from Iraq is parsed by the military command. Little wonder Americans don't have any idea of the charnel house Bush and Cheney have created in Iraq in our name. The U.S. military has murdered reporters in Iraq rather than allow the truth to be told. Now Americans are left with nothing but Bush administration lies as their only information from Iraq. What a disgrace.

31. We're awake, It's our "leaders" who are sleeping.
When George W. Bush and Richard Bruce Cheney ride off into the sunset early next year they will be escaping accountability for the greatest crimes ever perpetrated on the American people and the world, and Pelosi will be complicit through her tacit approval by refusing to hold them responsible.

34. When are they going to show en situ battlefield KIA's?
It only took about a year during WW2 for such photos to appear in major news sources like Life Magazine yet here we are, seven years into the WOT and still the images are banned/quashed/censored/suppressed.
