White House mum on Russian missiles into Georgia

CRAWFORD, Texas (AFP) — The White House on Monday declined to confirm that Moscow had moved short-range SS-21 missiles into Georgia but said any Russian forces that came in after the conflict flared August 6 must leave.

"I'm not going to comment specifically on what Russian units or equipment are in the area right now, but let me be clear: If it rolled in after August 6th, it needs to roll out," said spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

"That would be in keeping with the Russian commitment on withdrawal," he said as US President George W. Bush spent time on his Texas ranch.

Earlier on Monday a US defense official said on condition of anonymity that Russia had moved short-range SS-21 missiles into South Ossetia, possibly putting the Georgian capital Tbilisi in range.

Russia has finished the operation on halting Georgia's aggression against South Ossetia," he told a daily official briefing. "The pull-out of peacekeeping forces started today."

He denied a newspaper report that Russia had used its Tochka-U short-range tactical-ballistic missiles -- also known as the SS-21 -- during the 10-day conflict.

"(It) is used during attacks against large-scale sites and there was no point using it here," he said.

2. And Bush will respond by....
This isn't just "all hat no cattle", Bush doesn't even have a hat! The Russians have to be laughing themselves silly listening to the WH blather (McCain included, of course). "Don't invade a sovereign country. You better do what we say or else, er, else something. So there."

5. ridiculous reports what's the point to move TOPOL missiles
in South Ossetia ? This is again obvious propaganda to push the cold war rhetoric.
The TOPOL systems are mobile and hold ballistic missiles with long range capacity : they can reach Georgia, Europe or US from deep within russian territory. There is no point in moving them in South Ossetia, it's even dangerous to have them there.

This is one of the most stupid reports i read these days, and its competing with a lot of stupid reports and declarations from Georgia, US and RUssia.

BTW, did you notice the media coverage of the missile shield planned for Poland which angered Russia a few months ago because it was an obvious move against them and the strategic balance of power : at that time US and their agents in the MSM were speaking of Iranian missile threat (which is ridiculous), now they don't hide the true goal of these missiles (fuck RUssia).

7. you are totally right !
they're speaking of short range missiles http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/missile/row/ss-21.htm

My mistake came from the fact that i read in another article the same undocumented info highlighting the possible russian nuclear threat which -and that was my point- is ridiculous.

Russia mulling Baltic nuke fleet
Sun, 17 Aug 2008 08:01:00 GMT

Russia may arm its Baltic fleet with nuclear warheads.
Russia may arm its Baltic fleet with nuclear warheads in response to a US plan to build a missile shield in Poland, Sunday Times reports.

The London-based newspaper quoted senior military sources as saying that the Russian nuclear warheads could be supplied to submarines, cruisers and fighter bombers of the Baltic fleet based in Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania.

"In view of America's determination to set up a missile defense shield in Europe, the military is reviewing all its plans to give Washington an adequate response," a senior military source in Moscow told the Sunday Times.

This comes in response to an agreement signed by the US and Poland allowing a missile defense shield to be deployed in the European country in exchange for Washington's pledge to boost Warsaw's air defenses

9. Haven't heard about this one. A more logical and dangerous information one for sure.
Regarding the SS-21, on TV they spoke of ballistic missiles with nuclear option that's what trigerred my reaction. THe SS-21 is used by the russian army more like an old school cruising missile.
