Obama's speech seen by 38 million viewers
Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) - Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention was seen by more than 38 million people.

Nielsen Media Research said more people watched Obama speak than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year. Obama talked before a live audience of 80,000 people in Denver.

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by just over 20 million people.

Obama's audience might be higher, since Nielsen didn't have an estimate for how many people watched Obama on PBS or C-SPAN Thursday night.

1. Excludes Parties as well...
Think of all the people that tuned in around the country in groups. I know we had 14 in all last night.

16. Shame AP has no credibility
They have no idea how many people saw that speech. But I guarantee it was at least twice that.

AP, CNN, and Fox are all in damage control mode. It's kind of fun in a sad, pathetic way.

3. I bet they listened to the WHOLE thing too. McCain will get switched off after
the first 5 minutes - for those who even bother to turn it to his speech AT ALL!

He's a snooze! :eyes:

11. There should be a moratorium on "my friends" drinking games, it could be dangerous

4. Geeze, that doesn't even count the non-TV households like mine!
I went to bed about the time it started - downloaded the entire thing from DU this morning (watched it twice, once with the wife and kids). Nielson has the same problem the phone polls do - a large portion of the Obama base knows they can download rather than watch live and don't have land lines for the polls. The GOP base is "grounded" and available for traditional questioning. It doesn't make sense that McCain is over 40% in any poll unless you take this into consideration.

6. I don't even know what channel I watched it on. Some HD channel on DISH.
It was wonderful. No commentators whatsoever! All they did was show the convention!

8. Awesome news
That means that 38 million plus people made up their own minds instead of listening to the corporate media spin.

9. I watched it on PBS
And everyone was talking about it at work today - employees, customers, vendors.... Admittedly, this is a dem area but people were blown away.

My daughter in St. Paul called me up crying after the speech - she was so moved. And I have to admit, my husband and I both were pretty misty.

12. Paying attention
I guess people were paying attention more than the people inside my television thought, or else they were just scanning their tv guides and tuned in. Nah... I'm going with they have quietly been paying some attention.
