BREAKING: Arrests reported at Vets for Peace event in St. Paul (old lady cuffed)

Source: Minnesota Independent

At least nine people were arrested around 1 pm today near the Landmark Center in St. Paul. Their purported offense, according to a legal observer’s Twitter feed, was breaching a security perimeter.

MnIndy convention reporter Karl Bremer, who was at the scene, reports that at least two of the arrestees were elderly women, one of them a nun. He’ll be filing photos and a more detailed report later this afternoon.

1. Sounds like a boring arrest. It would appear they all got along swimmingly.

Nine protesters were arrested in an act of civil disobedience this afternoon during an antiwar march to the Xcel Energy Center where the Republican National Convention was gearing up.

About 500 activists led by Veterans for Peace marched from a rally at the State Capitol into downtown, walking behind a flag-draped coffin. As they reached St. Peter Street, organizers told those interested in an act of civil disobedience they could turn left.

Nine turned left. With retired surgeon David Harris of Red Wing in the lead, they crawled under a security tape and started nudging a loose piece of security fencing.

More than a dozen Ramsey County deputies in riot gear approached and detained them. Nine were taken into custody, seven were booked and two were released.

Earlier today St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman defended aggressive police action that has included a series of raids and arrests on the eve of the Republican National Convention. He said he hopes to protect the safety of "legitimate" protesters.

"We are making sure that people here to legitimately protest have the right to do that, but people engaging in criminal activity are not going to be able to do that," Coleman said in a Sunday morning interview.

He pointed to items seized in raids, including Molotov cocktails, a book called "Recipe for Disaster" and tools aimed at disabling buses.

"I think we have done absolutely everything we can to accommodate First Amendment rights," he said. "But the weapons recovered as a result of these operations make it very clear that there are people here

planning to engage in criminal behavior."

Absolute Bullshit... Molotov Cocktails... let's see the proof? Tools for disabling buses? ya.. a pair of kids round-tipped scissors? How about those "rare explosive implementation devices" they found...otherwise known as a "BIC" lighter. The picture of the elderly lady standing there reminds me of the man in front of the tank in Tianimen Squre. And America snoozes z-z-z-z-z-z-z

27. Perhaps you should know
the items for a Molotov where listed separately on the police evidence list, so anyone with the following items : glass bottle, lighter fluid of some sort does Kingsford count?, and rags has a Molotov by those standards.

BTW the events are happening in my backyard so to speak, my street is blocked, to get to work I would have to agree to be searched and once there can not leave even for lunch, the same goes for anyone working in the area near downtown and xcell center, lucky I asked for this time period off months ago.

You shithead and disgrace to the human race. I suppose you are content to play Eichmann to Fletcher's Heydrich.

Coleman makes me ashamed to be a Dem.

The RNC must be paying the town administrators handsomely to let them use their police force as storm troopers.

13. Homeland Security...
I'm sure the money is coming from our taxes going into Homeland Security. The militarization of local police is a direct result of Homeland Security Funds. Need a Tank or some Assault rifles? No problem... just call your good buddy Chertoff in Washington, DC, and he'll send some right over. I hope they sue these police departments for everything they have. Disgraceful. Where are the mayors of Minn and St. Paul?

10. The Abuses of Power at Minnesota are Greater than Denver.
The crowd at Denver had pushed the envelope to move out of their "Protest Zones" I have such an issue that the People are being corraled. We should not live in a Fascist State. End the Tyranny of the Government Over the People. Return to the Intent of Our Social Contract, the Constitution of the US. Please?

30. That old lady is a long time activist and is a nun
She is with Women Against Military Madness. She has already done prison time for protesting and crossing the line (or fence) at Schools of the Americas.

She fights for your democracy and freedom.

Although the rally and solomn procession went very smooth.. the rest of St Paul and Minneapolis were seeing over 100 raids, cars stopped and searched, people harassed. ICE raids have been happening like crazy.

And the RNC hasn't even happened. yet.
