6 ex-Soviet neighbors back Russia over Georgia
Source: AP

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia scored an important diplomatic victory Friday when it secured support from six other former Soviet nations for its war in Georgia.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that he and other leaders of nations that are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization signed a declaration Friday condemning Georgia's attack aimed at regaining control of its breakaway province of South Ossetia.

The declaration said members of the group are «deeply concerned about an attempt by Georgia to solve the conflict in South Ossetia by force which has led to numerous casualties among civilian population and peacekeepers and entailed grave humanitarian consequences.

The declaration also supported an «active role of Russia in helping peace and security in the region» and spoke about the need to «ensure firm security for South Ossetia and Abkhazia,» the two breakaway Georgian provinces whose independence Moscow has recognized.

. . .

The Russian-led security group links Russia with Armenia, Belarus and four Central Asian nations: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The support from resource-rich Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which have been courted by the West, is particularly important for Russia.

1. Russian paper story on this
Kommersant

Cheney fails to unite South Caucasus states against alleged Russian threat

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has finished his tour of the South Caucasus undertaken to strengthen Washington's positions in the fight for Caspian energy.

Talks in Baku failed, when President Ilkham Aliyev did not give Cheney a warm welcome. Moreover, he hinted that Azerbaijan would not support the idea of rerouting energy resources to bypass Russia. His decision was prompted by the developments in Georgia.

Sources in Aliyev's administration said the talks, which focused on the war in Georgia and the Nabucco gas pipeline project, were difficult. Aliyev hinted that he appreciated good relations with Washington but would not quarrel with Moscow.

In fact, Baku has decided to wait and see what happens next.
The sources say Cheney was heavily disappointed with the talks and even refused to attend a party in his honor.

5. You may be scornful
but the US government has been frantically courting Belarus. So what does that say about us when our government desired to be BFF with Belarus.

Is the Collective Security Treaty Organization the Real Anti-NATO?

23 Jan 2008

snip
CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha said that CSTO peacekeepers could in theory deploy anywhere in the world, provided they receive appropriate authorization from the United Nations. In practice, the intent of most CSTO governments is to have a force suitable for deployment within the territories of existing member states. According to CSTO agreements, such use would not require the approval of the U.N. Security Council, where the United States and China have the right of veto. The CSTO secretariat would simply inform U.N. headquarters of its plans.

For example, CSTO peacekeepers could deploy to enforce a ceasefire in a member country experiencing civil strife. Alternately, they could establish a protective barrier along a national border, such as the one between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, which is a common route for drug smugglers. At least some of the member governments might want CSTO soldiers to protect them from domestic challengers, whom they would presumably label as foreign-backed terrorists to legitimize an intervention by the CSTO, whose current mandate addresses defense against external threats.
