Iraq 'victory within sight': Palin
Source: AP/Yahoo

STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan (AFP) — A US victory in Iraq is "within sight," Republican vice presidential contender Sarah Palin said Friday.

Palin attributed the imminent success to the surge of troops sent to Iraq last year who have helped quell violence there.

"He refused to break faith with the troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight," the Alaska governor told an enthusiastic crowd in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

"And as a mother of one of those troops that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief."

9. Vapid empty arrogance
After look at several pictures of her that is what is resonating with me. There is a lot to be said for confidence and she has tons of it...why I am not sure but she is not one of those people who ponder such things. Forward ever forward- no man, weakness, tearing her children apart is going to stop her.

Her son hasn't deployed, but she talks as if he were one of the troops who she praises for bringing "victory within sight." That is clearly intentionally giving a false impression--a lie.

YES!

"That is clearly intentionally giving a false impression--a lie."

Same with the jet on ebay false impression (McLame said she sold it on ebay, which she didn't).... the "bridge to nowhere" false impression... and nearly everything else that comes out of Plain/McLames mouth. I just wish the MSM would hold them accountable when they false impress like this.

If you look at the casualty trend, it dropped dramatically right after the ceasefire went into effect, which is months after the surge began.

Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 12:11 PM by BearSquirrel2
Yeah, it was always 6 months away.

There are two double edged swords on the ground in Iraqnam right now. First is the fact that neighborhoods have become balkanized. Instead of being integrated, they've changed it to look more like Chicago ;-) Except it's a VERY heavily armed Chicago with deep religious emnity. The fact that Baghdad is now less integrated means that their is less value in being friendly. It reinforces the tribal mentality and devalues organization at the civil level, that is city and states instead of tribes.

The second long dagger is that they're literally bribing the militias not to fight. Well, this cannot continue forever. The true measure of "success" in a nation building effort is whether you can leave without the place falling apart. Well guess what??? As soon as we leave and stop paying tribute to the militias, they will be at it again. And now, they will be more heavily armed as we've financed the enemies of the Iraqi government.

This of course, is all just theater for the 2008 election. I was for the "surge" when John Kerry proposed it. In fact, I was for the "surge" when General Shinseki suggested it before any of this started. I was for the surge when Colin Powell stated it as part of his famous doctrine. Instead, Bush and Rumsfeld tried to low ball their Iraq effort for reasons of politics (no draft) and graft (more money for private contractors). The result was we got behind the 8-ball and allowed a domestic insurgency to form (it was never Al-Queda the Iraqi militias hate those guys by virtue of them behind both Arab and Wahhabi).

So now ... it's done. If the goal of victory is to leave a Democracy in our wake, we have lost. Their goal is to use Iraq as political theater for whatever the next election is. So in that context, I get "Mission Accomplished".

28. You are dead on right about it being merely political theater
that's all it ever was. They tried to create a new war-one they could claim victory of and the only purpose is more "with us or against us" wedge issues (btw "with us or against us" likewise was only for domestic consumption. It was/is political theater as well)

As Frank Rich so accurately described as "empty spectacle" such are the Bush years.

30. Talk radio
She is just talk radio in human form. Their entire convention was nothing but inane talk radio rhetoric which explains why it clearly didn't resonate with the mass public-you pretty much have to develop a tolerance and immersion into that world to consider it reasonable. You and I may be aware of it but most people aren't

32. That's a great insight.
I hadn't thought of it that way! But indeed, I had the same reaction to her RNC speech ("Turn that off! Turn that off!") that I have when I accidentally hear Rush Limbaugh.

Also, her refusal to be questioned by the press (8 days so far without a single question being asked) mirrors the basically one-way nature of radio.

Has there been a more worthless VP candidate? (Don't say Dan Quayle, he had plenty of acknowledged foreign policy expertise from his time in the Senate.) Spiro Agnew?

The USA Death Toll IS greater than 200 since surge started and the recommendations from the top military advisers is not to reduce the troop deployment at this time. The surge is not working and anyone who says different should withdraw their head from their ass and look around. Victory is not within sight and won't be for a hundred years.

So, is that her definition of VICTORY? Why noone inside the sold-out M$M ever point that out to her/him??
