Facing Veto, Democrats Drop Plan for Vote on Child Bill
Source: NY Times

Congressional Democrats have scrapped plans for another vote on expansion of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, thus sparing Republicans from a politically difficult vote just weeks before elections this fall.

Before the summer recess, Democrats had vowed repeatedly to force another vote on the popular program. But Democrats say they have shifted course, after concluding that President Bush would not sign their legislation and that they could not override his likely veto.

Mr. Bush vetoed two earlier versions of the legislation, which he denounced as a dangerous step toward “government-run health care for every American,” and the House sustained those vetoes.

Congress returns on Monday for a session expected to last three or four weeks. Lawmakers say they will focus on energy legislation, essential spending bills and efforts to revive the economy and to create jobs.

36. They really, really need to.
An October vote would be more lasting in the public memory, but it seems like they might not at all.

And for the life of me I can't figure out why, because forcing the Repugs to vote against this once again would just remind people how scummy they are.

Bring it up again before the election. Make it a fight. Publicize. Hammer the hell out of it. Then when Bush vetoes it, let everyone know that this is what will happen with a McCain/ Palin presidency. Then pass it after the election.

edit to add: start asking the candidates about their position on it at town hall meetings and Q and A sessions. Get this - and a few others Bush will veto surrounding family health care and economic issues into public consciousness.

12. What Stupidity
Are you so sure of an Obama victory in November?

What the heck are you going to do if McSame does get elected? Wring your hands and do nothing for two years (or four if you are lucky enough to get re-elected) because he is going to veto everything anyway?

Show a little backbone and send that bill to Dubya's desk. Make every Republican who votes against it explain to their constituents back home why.

Put McSame on the spot so people see how he really stands on the issue.

14. They need that money to bail out PIMCO, Wall Street, and China.
They got caught holding too many worthless, uninsured, Fannie and Freddie Bonds.

If the wasted that money on poor kids, those poor hedge fund operators wouldn't be able to afford health insurance. You gotta get your priorities right.

And CERTAINLY not to the GOP before an election.

Why, that might be seen as opposition.

21. this is why the dems pass good legislation
the dems can use the republicans' opposition against them in this election (they already are).

They judged the legislation would be better if it waited until after the election. They'll probably have a bigger majority, and probably the president wouldn't veto it anyway.

22. The Democrats are quislings, there is no other explanation
Co-conspirators in the Republican assault on America. LET the Junta veto the legislation and LET the Republickers take the heat for denying health coverage to children.

If the Democrats can't be bothered to get themselves elected, why again should I bother to help them get elected?

32. Dangerous step?
I can't figure WHY people vote for someone like this. It's a dangerous thing kids getting health care or anyone for that matter. Someone is very vulnerable when they can't get health care. I can understand voting for a republican, one that actually cares and improve life. Not make life fucking hard!! He just doesn't get it, like McCain.

All middle class veterans I know are voting for Barack, the reason why is because Bush is making everyone's life hard and see that in McCain.

42. ok so
a dangerous step toward “government-run health care for every American,” which would save everyone money and be a big step toward keeping good paying jobs in this country, and help start-ups to get up and growing, and provide stability for everyone and go a long way to closing the income disparity.

You know, I used to think that repubs were just mis-informed and over propagandized by the right wing media, now I just think they are out and out evil. Ok, there I said it.
