Auto Industry Asks Congress for $50 Billion; Insists This Isn't a Bailout
Source: US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT

Sep. 08, 2008 10:09 a.m.

The Big Three Detroit automakers have begun lobbying Congress for up to $50 billion in loans that would help them adjust to a market that demands more fuel-efficient vehicles. But the automakers insist the loans would not amount to a government bailout of the struggling auto industry.

The AP explains, "With Congress returning this coming week from its summer break, the industry plans an aggressive lobbying campaign for the low-interest loans. The situation is growing dire after months of tumbling sales, high gasoline prices and consumers' abandoning profitable trucks and sport utility vehicles." Congress has technically authorized $25 billion in loans "to help the companies build fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrids and electric vehicles." But the government hasn't provided money to fund that program. "With credit tight, automakers and suppliers now want lawmakers to come up with the money for the program -- and expand the pool of money available to $50 billion over three years."

The automakers' allies in Congress argue the loans are essential. Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.) told the AP, "This industry could fall down, literally, or be absorbed if they don't get something in place very soon. I think it's that severe."

Reuters adds that the industry is "urging Congress to act by the end of September so that the money can be available next year." Leaders in both parties "have said they are open to an expanded program. But the industry will face a compressed schedule in an election year when many lawmakers will push to leave Washington so they can campaign for re-election this fall."

Presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain have both endorsed the idea of a government loan to automakers, but it isn't clear how they would respond to this latest proposal. President Bush, for his part, has said the automakers should not expect a bailout.

The automakers, however, don't want us using that word.

3. If we give them $50 billion, they should give the US govt 50 billion shares of stock.
Let the Social Security fund take the shares. If the bailout fails and they end up going bankrupt, wth, we are no worse off than if we handed them the money as a regular bailout. And if the bailout works and they stop producing huge-ass SUV that get 5 mpg and start actually making nice, good mileage cars then we as Americans can share the rewards.

Stop socializing the risks and privatizing the rewards.

Any below market rate loans need to include provisions for higher fuel efficiency standards, lower executive pay, and job guarantees for American workers.

22. Why don't the automakers ask the countries overseas where they took our jobs.
The automakers have been cutting American manufacturing plants
and jobs in American and sending them overseas.
Why don't they ask those countries for welfare..

What do you call a vehicle made in Thailand with Japanese
steel, stamped on Japanese presses, built basically on the
Toyota Production System, and even sold in Japan? You call it
a Chevrolet Zafira. The maker is no other than General Motors.
GM's Rayong, Thailand, assembly plant is about as global and
diversified as it gets. It exports 90% of its products to 19
countries. It will soon make vehicles developed and originally
produced by Italian, German and Japanese makers. That plant,
furthermore, will be producing a sedan, a minivan, and a
pickup truck, all under the same roof.

GM Loses Record $4.5 Billion; Announces 12 Plant Closings

General Motors Corp. Monday reported that it lost a record
$4.5 billion in 1991, and it identified 12 of the 21 plants
that will close as it downsizes its operations during the next
few years.

GM's loss, the worst annual loss for an American corporation
in history, brought last year's total loss for the Big Three
-- GM, Chrysler Corp. and Ford Motor Co. -- to $7.7 billion.
GM's loss was larger than expected and reflected the impact
that a weak economy and cautious consumers were having on the
company's sales.

and afloat, but there comes a point at which you do not throw good public money after the bad business decisions of a CEO. For the sake of keeping jobs alive, give them the money - on a few conditions.

1) Fire all executives, directors, board members, partners, etc. to reduce the possibility of squandering. Executive pay will be cut to no more than 5x the highest-paid line worker (including stocks, options, dividends, and other sources of pay). If other workers will be asked to sacrifice, management must sacrifice too. No golden parachutes, no trough.
2) Sign a guarantee that no further jobs will be outsourced, no plants will be moved, and no new vehicles will be manufactured outside the country. Instead, jobs will be brought back from elsewhere.
3) Sign a guarantee that all new vehicles produced after the next three years must get 40+ MPG and meet appropriate emissions standards.

Violation of any of those should trigger an immediate call-in of the marker, including jail time for the responsible party (fraud) and possible nationalization.

24. Socialized Auto Industry! Got Some!
The Auto Industry refused to change their business plan when it was apparant that Oil was going to be a problem, now that Americans can't afford to buy the gas guzzlers the Industry wants a bailout.

There should be no more bailouts of companies with taxpayer money. Let them use their own assets to bail themselves out.
