Obama on Letterman: If That's What I'd Meant, Palin Would Be the Lipstick, ‘McCain's Failed Policies
Source: ABC News

In an interview on the "Late Show with David Letterman" to air later tonight, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., answers some questions on the lipstick controversy.

-----

"What I like about this scenario is because they -– the Republicans -- demanded an apology," Letterman says, "so that means there had been a meeting at some point somewhere along the line (of) they got together and said, 'You know what? He called our vice presidential candidate a pig.' Well, that seems pretty unlikely, doesn’t it?"

"It does," agrees Obama. "Keep in mind that, technically had I meant it this way –- she would be the lipstick!"

The audience laughs, but Letterman is confused.

"You are way ahead of me," says the late night host.

"The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig," Obama says. "I mean, just following the logic of this illogical situation."

18. I agree, but...
I just saw a new McCain ad--running in Colorado (which both parties are doing now) that uses almost word for word and ad by Obama--even the slogan, "More of the same" and it totally ridicules Obama. When is Obama going to run a commercial as damaging as those by the republipigs? So far, judging by the level of intelligence in this state and the ads running, McPalin will win this state on bully tactics--not on issues. But then, hasn't that always been the reason republipigs win? Sort of like bullies in high school: people gravitate toward whom they think will win--whomever is the tougher.

8. The audience
I'm sure Obama didn't mean it that way, but it sure sounded like his audience took it that way. Given that, it's easy to understand how the Republicans would take it that way. On the other hand they should have dropped it as soon as Obama responded.

10. why does everyone keep repeating this?
Did you not see the whole thing?

He never mentioned Sarah Palin. He was talking about Bush and McCain's POLICIES. His audience most certainly did not think he was talking about Palin and no thinking person who wasn't looking for an excuse to distract the media would have ever taken it that way.

this is typical BS - taking a statement out of context and attaching an accusation to it.

as Kucinich said, WAKE UP AMERICA!

37. That was the republican taliking points of the day as well...
After they were called on there bullshit, They switched gears saying they knew it wasn't targeted at Palin but the audience took it that way because they laughed differently.

Think about that for a minute.... The audience laughed differently????

Anyone would have to brain dead to even suggest anything that idiotic, but of course they are republicans.

40. Yes they did
It was the response you'd hear to a funny joke at a comedy club, not the response heard throughout the rest of the speech. Notice the laugh was only for the lipstick metaphor, not for the dead fish one.

Audience cheers: agrees with statement
Audience boos: disagrees with statement
Audience laughs: thought statement was funny

It's not a difficult concept.

24. And Obama isn't some cult leader who can "magically" control his audience's thoughts.
He couldn't control how they would react. The only thing the matter is what he said, and you nailed it perfectly.

19. we're not supposed to say LIPSTICK!
Palin owns that word now, just like the GOP owns moral, god, righteous, patriot, etc.

Just a heads up.

I mean, what does it say about McCain that he heard lipstick and pig and thought: "Obama's talking about Palin!"

Do they own pig now, too?

9. That's what I thought from the beginning...
I knew the saying, and knew what he was referring to, but the line of attack against him didn't follow any logic. If he were talking about her at all, it would be a complement in saying that she is the one that makes the campaign attractive.

21. that's the difference between an intelligent person and an ignorant one
Talking about economic policy and putting into the context of lipstick and pigs, that is how an educated, intelligent person would address a complicated issue so that it can be better understood by the greatest number of people.

But really stupid people aren't capable of comprehending anything like that at all, and so their simplistic minds try to grasp for another meaning elsewhere, totally outside the field of economics, a complicated field which they obviously can't grasp in such feeble minds.

For that reason, McSame will get the Joe Six-Pack vote, he'll get the village idiots aand illiterate rednecks and KKKer's to vote for him, even when there's a woman on the ticket, and we can only hope there is enough intelligent voters out there to surpass that morass of ignorance.

BTW today I saw a bumber-sticker, a Dixie 'stars and bars' flag super-imposed with a drawing of General Nathan Bedford Forrest in the middle ( I live in Central Florida). Definitely McSame material here.

28. Funny that Obama says "lipstick on a pig" and republicans think he's talking about palin
So that's what they really think about her. Obama didn't mention her, not even in vague reference. And the repugs' immediate thought after they heard "lipstick on a pig" was palin. What a bunch of two-faced whiners.

and it's out there on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR8IhMMhe8w , but Karl Rove and the other PNAC enablers decide that Obama is the jerk.

When you have NOTHING to run on.. you manufacture this SHIT, these faux scandals to divert attention and TRY to make your opponent unlikable. Fuck that - McCain/McPain is positively toxic when it comes to likable.

I mean this is the guy who talked mad smack about my current Governor, Tim Kaine, blasting him and Obama both on the experience issue and tried to make a mockery out of Richmond, VA.

Haven't seen him say a single word about Palin who has less experience than Tim Kaine, even comparing them directly based on Rove's rant on Face the Nation.
