Brazil plans to build 50 more nuclear power plants

15 Sep 2008 bbj.huMines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao announced Friday Brazil plans to build 50 to 60 nuclear power plants in half a century, with each having capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

“The general idea is to build one plant per year,” he said during a visit to the construction site of Brazil’s third nuclear power plant, Angra 3. The ambitious plan, a priority for the administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has yet to be approved by Brazil’s National Council of Energy Policy, he added.

The construction of Angra 3 started in 1984, but was halted for21 years. The decision to resume the project and expand the nuclear program was welcomed by Brazil’s industrial sector as a way to prevent an energy crisis in future decades, but environmentalists warned of the problem of the residues storage.

Angra 1 and Angra 2, both located in the southeastern state of Rio De Janeiro, currently have a combined installed capacity of 2,000 megawatts. Besides the three plants, four others, two in northeastern Brazil and two in the southeastern part, are due to start operation by 2020. It is said Brazil’s environment ministry will not allow Angra 3to start operation until the residues problem is resolved.

1. It´s almost a typical plan globally, but plans change.
World 439

We have the technology to stop this but the scientists have no say and no power. The CO2 will probably be first to end it all anyway. It´s really embarrassing to be a human!

2. Why does Hungary care about Brazil´s energy plans?
Why is the Budapest Business Journal written in perfect American english?

I can have a guess at the first one. The article about Brazil´s aggressive, though typical, long range energy plan is right next to an article about Hungary´s apparently desperate energy situation. ¨The price of gas, which also affects district heating charges, is a sensitive political issue in Hungary. Opposition party Fidesz which has a wide lead in opinion polls over the ruling Socialists, repeatedly slams the cabinet when it hikes gas prices. Gas prices to households rose by 9.9% in July, 5.8% in April and 5% in January. A further price hike of 6.55% is due on Oct 1.

The ruling minority socialist party has strong ties with Russia, where all the expensive gas comes from. If Hungary had a nice leader like Lula da Silva (love that name), they would become energy independent of mother of all mothers, Russia.

I´m sorry they must be so cold in the winter. To make it worse, they have to be Hungry too.

I play Monday morning head games so I don´t need Monday night Football.

4. Uranium is a finite resource
Going into fission in a really big way, on a global scale, would eventually require breeder reactors. Those things are kinda tricky.
