Sen. Hagel doubts Palin's ready
Source: OMAHA WORLD HERALD

Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska on Wednesday became the nation's most prominent Republican officeholder to publicly question whether Sarah Palin has the experience to serve as president.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

1. I like Hagel! Disagree with him on a lot, but he's the real deal --
like his pal Joe Biden. :7

37. yes, and his views were like Kerry's when they returned from Vietnam
he was angry and felt he was lied to. this is similar to how Kerry felt. they thought the war was wrong and they should not have gone in .

Chuck Hagel on the other hand still thought it was the right thing to do.

i wonder when exactly Chuck Hagel started having a different view of things. maybe as Senator he got more of an inside view of how things worked and that the people at the top (Bush administration) did not always do the right thing. i'm sure his brother Tom may also have influenced him.

remember, Hagel endorsed McCain and was one of his biggest supporters in 2000. it says a lot that he is not supporting him this time around.

40. From what I read
Hagel radically changing his views on Vietnam after he read about Johnson acknowledging that the war cannot be won but not wanting to be the first president to lose a war. Andif I remember correctly, these statements were made before or while both Hagels were in Vietnam and having a very tough time at it.

5. I'm kind of hoping that after his term expires,
he might get a job in the Obama administration.

Don't know if he'd leave the Rep party because some of his leanings are definitely Republican, but he's one of the people I'd like to see work with us in our effort to reach across the aisle.

3. Also from the article:
Palin has cited the proximity of Alaska to Russia as evidence of her international experience.

Hagel scoffed at that notion.

"I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,'" he said. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."

(The entire article is good!)

8. i think these comments from Hagel are better than if he endorsed Obama
if he endorsed Obama people would just see him as a supporter. but without the endorsement they pay more attention to the things he says.

26. Hagel has some guts... maybe there is
hope for Nebraska to come around. Well, I can dream.

As for the Palin comment about seeing Russia from her house and previous comments regarding her ability to run a country because she had 19 months experience being a Gov of 600,000 - It's like saying my kid should run Microsoft because he had a lemonade stand for two summers. GMAB :eyes:

6. "insulting to the American people"
from the same article -

"I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,'" he said. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."

A senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Hagel has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war and had considered making his own run for president. He skipped the Republican National Convention in favor of a trip to Central and South America.

Hagel, who says he has no plans to endorse either presidential candidate, traveled with Democratic nominee Barack Obama to the Middle East in July.

19. How can ANY politician with any degree of self-respect be a part of the Republican Party any longer?
It has become a freak show since Bush stole the pResidency, and it wasn't all that great before then considering their genuine mutants, like Jesse Helms.

They all look like criminals now, by golly.

He's wise to distance himself any way possible.

27. This alone should disqualify her ...
Palin has cited the proximity of Alaska to Russia as evidence of her international experience.
... were we a rational country. But then it would disqualify McCain, as well, since he's offered the same justification on at least two televised occasions.

28. Hagel’s ES&S counted an estimated 80% of his winning votes THAT CHUCK HAGEL?
It's nice to hear him challenge Bush, and he may be the real deal, however....
In 1996, Hagel became the first elected Republican Nebraska senator in 24 years when he did surprisingly well in an election where the votes were verified by the company he served as chairman and maintained a financial investment. In both the 1996 and 2002 elections, Hagel’s ES&S counted an estimated 80% of his winning votes. Due to the contracting out of services, confidentiality agreements between the State of Nebraska and the company kept this matter out of the public eye. Hagel’s first election victory was described as a “stunning upset” by one Nebraska newspaper.
So forgive me if I take anything he says with anything but a questioning mind

31. I was wondering for how long
he would be able to be quiet on this. I suppose he had to wait for the bouts of nausea and throwing up to stop. I have no idea whether he will go any further than this, but I am sure that that "she can see Russia from Alaska" bit coming from McCain himself must have put a stop at whatever illusions he may still have harbored about McCain.
