Court strikes down Missisissippi governor's effort to manipulate Senate race

The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the special election to replace Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) – who resigned last December – will appear near the top of the November ballot.

The court ruled 8 to 1 that the ballot layout approved by Republican Governor Haley Barbour violated state election law by listing the race at the very bottom of the ballot. Barbour was chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1993 to 1997.

The ruling is a victory for Trudy Berger, the Pike County election commissioner who filed suit on September 9 to stop the Barbour ballot.

“We're ecstatic about the ruling,” said Berger’s attorney, Charles Griffin, “All along, my position has been that everyone deserves a fair opportunity to vote in this election.”

This is HUGE because we actually have a chance to win this election. Former MS Governor Musgrove has been running only a few points behind the repuke candidate

Fuck the rule of law!! Its only a slogan to those with values, just like abstinence training. And just how do you "train" abstinence?

2. I was wondering how this was going to be resolved
Thanks for posting.

Having a major office at the bottom of a ballot is insane and, as we now see, illegal.

4. It will be interesting to vote in two U. S. Senate Elections this year
Cochran's regular and lott's special. I doubt cochran will be unseated but Musgrove has a shot. He and Wicker are tossing tons of mud at each other in TV ads.

5. I wish I could rec this a million times.
These state victories--especially in red states--don't get enough play in the national media. Which is a shame because I think they point to a significant swing to the left (or at least the center) by large numbers of red state citizens.

6. that Barbour is a fascist
Mississippi has the worst historical record in the nation in electing governors. I thought Fordice was a monster, but Barbour even beats him.
