McCain's Bottom Line: No Deal = No Debate
Source: Marc Ambinder

A senior campaign official says that McCain will NOT debate -- no matter what -- if Congress hasn't reached an agreement on a bailout package.

The aide said that Obama's refusal to suspend his campaign will have no bearing on McCain's decision to attend the debate.

The aide did not know whether Gov. Palin would attend Oct. 2's vice presidential debate if Congress, by that point, still hasn't reached a deal.

Another aide said: "The VP debate is days off. We're focused on getting a deal and getting to the debate on Friday."

1. So, if there is a crisis somewhere in the world, President McCain
would suspend everything to focus on that crisis?

Can Republicans multi-task at all?

3. Stinky fish all over the place.
Right now, it's the Dems in Congress who are trying to get a bill passed and Pukes who are completely against it. So what's the deal with McCain's hard line?

It's a setup.

McCain swoops into DC and convinces all the Pukes to pass a bill and is hailed a savior, a hero.

Bet on it.

31. it's the new thug strategy
to be against this bailout and put the failure of this bill onto the Dems as a means by which to regain control of government in 2-6 years. It was on Countdown last night. Some website called nextright.com (I think that's the name) has some kind of eff'd up strategy for this up on their website. Barney Frank called the thug who owns the site a 'hack' yesterday on Countdown.

36. I'm thinking that too
Let's McCain look like a saviour if a deal is done. If it isn't, let's him skip the debate because the country needs him more (that "Country First" garbage again). If Palin then debates Joe, it makes her look like the star of the ticket even more than she already does (and I am convinced she's being groomed for 2012).

9. So..in a time of crisis...McCain is incapable of multi-tasking
incapable of dealing with more than one thing at a time...incapable of the many roles a President sometimes has to play

McCain isn't capable enough to be President...but we already knew that.

But he's not that smart, he doesn't know squat about economics (by his own admission, even), and he hadn't even read the THREE-PAGE proposal as of yesterday! His presence in DC right now would be, at best, irrelevant.

14. He can't debate until
the bailout and crisis have a resolution signed. He's too exposed before that point and will not be able to "protect" himself from his past. He's way too much of a target and may be less of one if Congress gets something through for the DEBT Crisis caused by Wall Street. His legendary toddler temper must be a full blown flaming spiral of death today after seeing his poll numbers. This is a desperate attempt by a campaign that seems to be unraveling. They must be willing to appear cowardly instead of the alternative, but what is the alternative? Incompetent? Corrupt?

20. Also the National Enquirer announced today that Palin
did have an affair in 1996 , while Mayor of Wasilla, with Brad Hanson. He and Todd Palin were partners in a snow mobile business. Enquirer says they have 3 letters from Hanson family attesting to this --one is an affidavit.I would imagine this is another reason he is opting out. The chickens come home to roost.

This temper tantrum by McCain can be spun to Obama's great advantage. This could feed directly into the "temperament" attack strategy.

27. Nice try with the RW hostage mentality, McCain. We're not buying it this time!
Suddenly the entire financial fiasco and the debate revolve around him and we all have to drop the discussions and ram something through, not because it's a good option or the right thing to do, but because he has some artificial timetable...

"My way or the highway" doesn't always work and certainly isn't called for here. McCain is obviously terrified the debate would focus on the bailout and he'd look like a flipflopping ignoramus trying to discuss it.

Newsflash, John: the nation can handle a discussion of both events at the same time, and we're willing to wait on the bailout until the deal is the best possible for all of us, not just for you. Don't be a selfish little baby. Remember - Country First!

28. Dishonor is John McCain's new middle name
John McCain has been sucked down to the level of the neocon handlers and underhanded lobbyist's he has running his campaign.
He knows that if he and Obama have a debate people will wonder who invited the dead guy.
He will be taken to pieces and the GOP knows it so they needed to come up with an excuse.
I think if he does not turn up fine just have Obama be there for the hour or how long it is and lets hear his answers to the debate questions.
Maybe McCain knows that the fix is in already and the popular vote will not matter and will not select the next administration.

This is like your kid coughing and then saying he's too sick to go to school and take a tough test. 90% of Americans think this is BS. I hope and PRAY that McCain continues with this strategy. This electioon is officialy over and it is landslide Dem. People aren't holding back now. McCain is being eviscerated. I was watching many of the newscasts this afternoon and none of the anchors/pundits were doing very well at holding back their contempt of McCain's desperate tactic.

38. God, what a load...
...of whatever disgusting stuff you can think of.

Grampy wants to postpone the debate because HE IS LOSING, and is trying to retool his campaign. He probably thinks that he will get some type of storyline/issue/whatever to use against Obama in regards to this. Also, he is counting on this issue "blowing over" in the course of a week or so, when it will likely be in the back of the voters' minds and not the front the way it is now. Besides, I've been hearing rumblings about the Keating Five issue - if Obama brings that up in the debate (and he damned well should), and articulates how McGrampaw was part of that sordid tale of monetary muck, then it's over for McCain.
