Soldier's mother ``ecstatic'' about Obama's bracelet
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 05:58 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: Chicago Tribune

MILWAUKEE - The mother of a Wisconsin soldier who died in Iraq says she was "ecstatic" during Friday's debate when Senator Barack Obama mentioned the bracelet she gave him in honor of her son.

Tracy Jopek of Merrill told The Associated Press on Sunday she was honored that he remembered Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb.

She criticized Internet reports that suggested Obama exploited her son for political purposes.

She acknowledges e-mailing the campaign in February asking that Obama not mention her son in speeches or debates. But she says Obama's mention on Friday was appropriate because he was responding after Senator John McCain said a soldier's mother gave him a bracelet.

Jopek says Obama's comment rightfully suggested there's more than one viewpoint on the war.

Glad this Wingnut talking point has been laid to rest. They've been trying to push today that Obama mentioned against the wishes of the family.

4. and his concern is all the more genuine...
He's been wearing that bracelet since before February? ...AFTER she asked him not to mention it or use it in the campaign? That ought to shame the shit out of McCain, but of course, it doesn't.

7. It's the father/ex-husband who raised all the fuss
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 06:41 PM by rocknation
And since it was the mother who sent Obama the bracelet, he doesn't really have any skin in the game.

According to Newsbusters,

...Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek...recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son's name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family...Mr. Jopek, a man who believes in the efforts in Iraq and is not in favor of Obama's positions on the war...his wife gave Obama the bracelet because "she just wanted Mr. Obama to know Ryan's name"...and "wanted it to be something between Barack Obama and herself."

...He also said that his ex-wife has refused further interviews on the matter and that she wanted Obama to stop wearing the reminder of her son's sacrifice that he keeps turning into a campaign soundbyte.

Before the DU thread on the subject was locked this morning, I suggested that unless it was Mr. Jopek who gave Obama the bracelet, he didn't have any skin in the game. And thankfully, Mr. Jopek's ex-wife has since learned how to speak for herself.

10. That doesn't even make sense
Why would she give him the bracelet and then want him to stop wearing it? I'm sorry for his loss, but he was Mrs. Jopek's son, too.

8. Typical Fuckin Asshole Ex-Husband -
they say anything to get attention. It's tragic that he would use his war hero son's name to get attention on himself.

What a sorry bastard !!

11. Here's to you, Ms. Jopek,
and thank you for standing up for the right thing.

What a solid woman. What a terrible loss she's endured. And still, she has memorialized her son in a grand way.

Way to go, Ms. Jopek.

20. Got any numbers on that?
The military was very conservative when I was on active duty. Granted that was a long time ago. I haven't seen any numbers recently do you have any?

26. Fire and 'DissedByBush'; military overseas are donating to Obama 6 to 1 over McCain
This nonpartisan report says a lot: http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2008/08/troops-deployed-abroad-give-61.html

1. People in the military don't spout their politics, it's just not done so it's really difficult to say that 'the military' is conservative unless you're trying to make it seem like the Republicans own the military.

2. 2 of the 3 people in my family who are in the military are Democrats.

3. The Republican party does not own the flag either, I hate that they try to. Democrats are alive and well in the military, just because some loud mouth Republicans try to make them unimportant doesn't make it so. We will hear their voices loud and clear on November 4.

4. My husband asked his reservist buddies who they were voting for in the primary (in an under the radar kind of way - see #1) and the majority were voting for Obama with the second largest group voting for Hillary and the smallest voting for McCain. That sounds like a Democratic majority to me.

5. You can't mouth off against your commander-in-chief but you sure can make a loud statement when you go into the voting booth (or slap your absentee ballot into an envelope along with some sand and a desert spider or two).

27. Thanks for the report, quite interesting.
In regards to your statements, I don't know what you thought I was trying to say. Let me state it more clearly when I was in the military many years ago during a far more conservative time it was my experience that the majority were conservative at that time, not a great majority maybe 60/40. Granted that wasn't years into an unpopular war.

21. I currently know a lot of military people
They are overwhelmingly Republican, and I am not just talking about officers. I visited an Army post recently and noticed a lot of McCain and old Bush bumper stickers and only one Obama, and that may have been a civilian.

25. Wouldn't help
The bumper stickers are generally on the back. Post tags are on the front. I might as well be taking pictures of any car, not necessarily one on a military post, and not necessarily one driven by military personnel.

23. sorry if I'm being redundant ...
I've not read through all the replies.

The difference between Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama is (not just this ... obviously) Mr. Obama WAS STILL WEARING the bracelet.

BTW, if I ever hear Mr. McCain say the words "friend" or "fundamental(ly)" again I think I'll do something rash ... like ... oh I dunno ... tear apart my antique dining room furniture. Or. Cut up all my vintage clothing. Or. Just. Something. Rash.

$10 is fine. Or just buy an obama tee shirt and put it on. Or just write obama on your window in soap with a happy face next to it. Really, you'll feel better.
