Chavez accepts Russia nuclear aid
Source: BBC

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced that he wants to develop a nuclear programme with the aid of his country's ally, Russia.

Mr Chavez emphasised that he wanted nuclear power only for peaceful ends, citing energy and medical purposes.

But the announcement, on top of large weapons purchases, is likely to feed growing concern about the increasing Venezuelan military power.

Venezuela has spent $4bn on Russian arms and plans to buy more from China.

The controversial Venezuelan leader's statement that he wanted nuclear capability only for energy and medical purposes may not reassure his neighbours like Colombia, or even the United States.

Mr Chavez has made his dislike of the Bush administration well known.

3. The guy has probably been thinking of how Chavez has been trying to overthrow Bush. Oh, wait!
I've got that all wrong! He HASN'T done that, has he?

I swear, if some of these people were forced to sit still and THINK these things through, instead of "sharing" their opinions first, their heads would explode. Simply incapable.

19. You're right
Venezuela DOES have right to have nuclear energy. I was being over-paranoid about nuclear weapons... I wish we all would get rid of them. Sorry for being a noob :banghead: I promise to think twice before posting again. Am i forgiven?

22. No "forgiving" required
It's just that we get used to seeing trolls (*) posting Bush talking-points
on every Chavez thread so the welcome mat tends not to be as padded as
on some other subjects.

Welcome & have fun (and don't be shy about the profile either! :hi: )

(*) = not just low-post count people but some well-established goat-eaters too.

4. What about Brazil's nuclear program?

The Bush administration has no problems with Brazil's program.

6. "Growing concern about the increasing Venezuelan military power"
Who is concerned? Nice passive construction in that sentence. I don't hear Brazil or Ecuador or Peru or Bolivia or Guyana or Surinam complaining about this. Colombia, maybe. The Pentagon, definitely.

And, ooh, he's spent about $4 billion on his military. What's that, about 10 days of the US military spending in Iraq?

7. Using Russia's logic...
We can not attack Venezuela for Russia's invasion in our sphere of influence. I'm sure we can create a large percentage of American citizenry right in Venezuela if we hand out passports like Russia did in Georgia.

10. Radioactive oil?
Can we still use oil that has been near a catastrophic nuclear plant failure?

Russians have a great history with reactors. Naval and civ plants from russia seem to kill people.

11. Hugo Chavez wants Venezuela to build nuclear programme
Source: Telegraph UK

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced he wants the country to develop a nuclear programme with the help of Russia. He insists, as do the Iranians, that it would be for purely peaceful purposes.

"We certainly are interested in developing nuclear energy, for peaceful ends of course, for medical purposes and to generate electricity," Mr Chavez said during a political rally of his United Venezuelan Socialist Party in Caracas. "Brazil has various nuclear reactors, as does Argentina. We will have ours and Vladimir said Russia is ready to help Venezuela develop nuclear energy."

The Venezuelan president recently returned from Moscow, where increasingly close ties were cemented with planned joint military exercises, energy accords and a Russian offer of a billion-dollar credit line to Venezuela for further arms purchases. Mr Chavez has already spent $4.4 bn on Russian aircraft, submarines and weapons. The Venezuelan president said he had forged a "profound friendship" with Mr Putin.

Colombia and other neighbours are worried by Mr Chavez. A source in the Colombian Defence Ministry said that intelligence reports suggested that while Mr Chavez had publicly called for Colombian rebels to lay down their arms, Caracas was still providing covert support for Colombian guerrillas.

12. Before the Chavez wants to eat your babbies crowd
goes into full freak out mode...

Please consider that this is just one more indication that the U.S. of A. has no real choice than to accept the fact that we are destined to be just another nation in the world, not a "superpower." We need to learn to live as simply one amongst many equals. If we don't accept that and live by it we are doomed.

18. Oh great. Just what the world needs: more radiation and nuclear waste.
Chavez should focus on clean, renewable energy for Venezuala. Being close to the equator would make his country a prime location for solar power.

21. More likely he'd focus on the Orinoco heavy oil belt
Which would be WORSE than nuclear waste, because it would release massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere and accelerate global warming.

24. Yeah, it's sad. Venezuela is addicted to oil.
Just as much as America. You'd think having one guy in charge instead of a whole democracy and beuracracy would make it easier to change course, but it looks like that's nit going to happen.
