Ford U.S. sales fall 34.6 percent

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said on Wednesday its U.S. sales fell an unadjusted 34.6 percent in September to its weakest levels of the year due to a weakening U.S. economy and tight credit conditions.

...

For Ford, sales dropped to 120,788 vehicles in September from 184,612 vehicles a year earlier, including all of Ford's brands, the automaker said.

The results, which were not adjusted for one less selling day in September compared with a year earlier, landed hardest on big trucks and SUVs.

In its Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands, car sales fell 19.4 percent, crossover sales were down 30.2 percent, SUV sales plummeted 57 percent and truck and van sales fell 38.8 percent.

Second Focus, just bought it, getting 36 mpg.

Bought Taurus last year, 27 mpg, one of the best cars I've ever had.

And the 2001 F250 diesel...great truck.

All union made in the USA.

2. F-Series pickup down over 41%
That's a killer right there. Lots of companies likely holding off upgrading, etc. Sadly, also probably due to a lot of hardworking folks that use them being out of work.

6. I've seen a couple, and...
this isn't really minivan country. They seem to be selling up to Ford's plan countrywide (at least until this mess started)

10. I haven't seen one yet either
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:20 PM by carlyhippy
when we were vehicle shopping back in June I wanted to look at one, I had seen the ads online, but they had not put them out in the lots yet when I was vehicle shopping. I ended up getting an Xterra instead. The Flex sort of looks like a pimped up Scion on steriods.

16. I've seen one and only one.
There's a Ford dealer up the street a bit. I should see more than that just from test drives.

8. I think the CEO they got a while back has things going in the right direction
I have 120,000+ miles on my 2002 Ford Focus. If it gets to 200k I will probably continue to give Ford my business.

9. I Like My Escape Hybrid
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:06 PM by AndyTiedye

Most fuel-efficient SUV on the market 4 years running.
EPA rates it at 34 city, 30 hwy.

Why haven't they put this hybrid powerplant into a CAR?
If they can get that kind of mileage in an SUV, surely they
could get into the 40s with a lighter-weight, more aerodynamic vehicle.

14. "Why haven't they put this hybrid powerplant into a CAR?"
Who knows. If they did, more people would be buying Fords. I have an old 5.0 Mustang that I can't seem to part with. With the gas prices anymore, it barely ever sees the light of day. :(

11. They will have to build cheaper and more fuel efficient cars.
We are entering a recession or depression, so people will have less money to spend on cars and gas.

My brilliant and innovative Idea: Build cheaper and more fuel efficient cars.

13. Well no, but I was around then.
I always thought the Pacer was too wide and that the Gremlin was too ugly. :)

But that is the kind of thinking Detroit needs. 70's thinking. Under Carter there was a mandate to improve gas mileage and energy efficiency. The speed limit was 55 and the thermostat was 68. That's what I'm talking about.

And increase the fuel mileage to 60mpg. This the 21st century after all.

15. The Pacer and Gremlin.....
Wow, that brings back memories. I can remember going car shopping as a kid with my father and lots were lined with those. I thought they were so ugly, I talked him into buying a Ford LTD. :)
