New, controversial FBI guidelines go into effect
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US Attorney General Michael Mukasey has signed new guidelines for FBI operations he said are designed to better protect the country from terrorist attacks, but that raise concern of some lawmakers and civil rights groups.

"These guidelines provide more uniform, clearer and simpler rules for the FBI operations ... are designed to allow the FBI to become, among other things, a more flexible and adept collector of intelligence," Mukasey and FBI director Robert Mueller said in a statement Friday.

"Since the 9/11 attacks, the FBI and the Department of Justice more broadly have set priorities for and reorganized their activities to prevent future terrorist acts against the American people," the statement said.

The new, revised regulations -- the original version met strong criticism from congressional committees last month, comprise 50 pages dealing with five areas of FBI investigation, including criminal, national security and foreign intelligence.

16. Yep - if someone's civil rights get grossly violated now, the FBI can just say...

...that the agent was a "bad apple". The agent was just acting on their own...blah blah blah...

7. They're Used to It
And it's not clear they wanted this in the first place. It may be shoved down their throats.

One way to find out is to observe the retirement patterns.

9. They DON'T want to be hated, LiberalFighter. They just think they are the last bulwark against
the terrorists and should be able to do "whatever it takes" to keep America safe. To them we are deluded, brain-washed pacifists who would let BinLaden take over America if we were in charge.

It's totally an US versus Them thing. They are the good guys and the Bad Guys will do anything to win, so the Good Guys have to be able to DO ANYTHING to keep the country safe.

FBI agents surely think of themselves as being patriotic Americans. It's just that they get caught up in the anti-terrorist fervor and forget this is a constitutional government. And people like Cheney and Mukasey want to insure that they are keeping tabs on us.

Just as massive corporate consolidation is designed to serve customers better.

What a country!

And, as Obama would say: If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you in Alaska.

Hi Agent Mike!:hi:

11. Let's see
Hmmmm... nothing to see here, move along....

For the first time ever.. an Army brigade assigned to the US for "crowd control"....

The Justice dept. withholding fed funds from every law enforcement agency in the country unless every citizen contact is reported to the fed database...

Rep. Sherman reporting tha Congress was threatened with martial law....

and now the FBI....

yeah, nothing to see here, move along.

(me thinks the * White House is in a race to fuck up and take over our country as much as possible before January... and my opinion still remains: there will be no January 20th)

14. Sometimes paranoia is healthy.
Yeah, I'm scared, even though I'm Canadian. Who wants to live next door to a police state? Besides that I've been worried for some time that a McCain administration would invade Canada for our water and oil.

I've been telling people about an old science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". It's about a Moon colony fighting for independence. Heinlein's politics were always way right wing, but this book is great. It's practically a step by step guide to organizing a resistance movement and revolution. It even gives detailed instructions on how to set up resistance cells. Maybe people in both the U.S. and Canada should read it.

Everybody out there help GOTV, and make sure you find out about i.d. requirements.

13. Another reason
Why 9/11 needs to be reinvestigated. The terrorist live in the White House and hopefully we will get rid of them Jan 20th when Obama moves in.

17. America becomes a bigger lie with each passing day
Land of the free? Home of the brave? Liberty and justice for all?

"The American Civil Liberties Union, who had called for an investigation into the first version of the FBI regulations, said the new rules "reduce standards for beginning 'assessments.'"

"More troubling still," it added, "the guidelines allow a person's race or ethnic background to be used as a factor in opening an investigation, a move that the ACLU believes may institute a racial profiling as a matter of policy."

18. Housekeeping before Barack gets in... As noted on Glenn Greenwald's podcast this week
at Salon.com on this topic, the FBI has been following these "New Rules" since before 9/11. So, in essence, these "New Rules" are designed to cover the violations of the past 8 years. Make it official before any real oversight (sorry, Congress) gets into office.
