January 19, 2004
MOSCOW – In an unprecedented move in the history of Russian jurisprudence, Moscow Basmanny court has agreed to consider suits filed by three victims of apartment bombings in 1999, who are seeking material and moral damages from the Finance Ministry, victims’ lawyer Igor Trunov announced. A positive decision in these cases might attract a myriad of legal suits from other victims of terrorism-attacks in the country.
The three plaintiffs lost their relatives in the blasts. For instance, Galina Gurova, who lost her daughter and son-in-law, is claiming for $300,000 compensation for moral damages, 43,000 rubles more for the funeral expenses and a lifetime pension of 3,000 rubles in connection with the loss of breadwinner. Other plaintiffs are victims or relatives of over 240 killed and several others maimed when apartments were blasted by bombs allegedly planted by Chechen warlords and their cohorts in 1999 in Moscow and Volgodonsk in southern Russia.....
