MTSU Cancels Classes After Credible Threat
Posted: Oct 9, 2008 12:26 PM

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee State University has canceled classes after what school officials call a "credible threat."

MTSU president Sidney A. McPhee canceled classes as of noon Thursday, saying the school had received a series of threatening emails. There have reportedly been several suspicious fires, as well.

"A credible threat to our campus has been made," McPhee said in an email sent to faculty, staff and students.

Classes will not resume until Wednesday, October 15. Other campus events will still go on as scheduled.

3. Update:
MTSU spokeswoman Lisa Rollins said an e-mail through Yahoo.com was sent Wednesday to an administrator on the business faculty, threatening the entire student community with bodily harm.

Rollins said the e-mail did not say how people would be harmed. She said concern was heightened by the setting of three small fires on campus recently.

After classes ended Wednesday, an e-mailed threat was more widely circulated. Rollins said also a remodeled residence hall had been temporarily evacuated Wednesday night.

The news ticker on tv reports the campus is being evacuated right now.

5. The student paper actually gives us a bit more:
This past Wednesday, Oct. 8, several campus e-mail clients received general but threatening e-mails. The author of the threat indicated that the unspecific action would take place today, Oct. 9. An investigation is being conducted to locate the sender. The campus police is asking any suspicious activity be reported immediately.

How difficult is it to locate someone who has sent multiple emails?

4. I just asked about this in the TN forum.
My oldest is a freshman there and I'm really trying to remain somewhat calm. I finally accessed the campus police website, police.mtsu.edu/crimealert/index.htm, and no where is it mentioned that students were being told to remain in their dorms or to get off campus if they have a way to leave.

He hasn't called to tell me that he's been told to leave and sounded rather calm (10 mins. or so ago). Then I saw below where the campus is being evacuated and he still hasn't called back to tell me that he's leaving, so I really don't know what to think, and the calm may be leaving me really soon.

6. He should be fine, they just interviewed a student who said everyone is remaining calm.
Hang in there, I'll post anything new as it happens.

10. Here's a link to the student paper:
http://media.www.mtsusidelines.com/media/storage/paper202/news/2008/10/09/News/Mcphee.Mum.On.Details-3479813.shtml

While McPhee and Johnson declined to comment on the nature of the threat, they told "Sidelines" a news conference with campus Police Chief Buddy Peaster will occur at some point today in order to ascertain more details.

I'm sure they will televise the conference.

20. Thanks. I just got off of the phone with him and he's on
his way home. His room mate's Mom panicked and dispatched a cousin to get him and he did say that students were clearing out. That evac that was mentioned earlier could've been students leaving because classes were cancelled.

He did say that channel 5 has a helicopter circling the campus, and that the RA mentioned that an evacuation was being considered and the RAs needed to be prepared, whatever that means.

21. Strange, the news ticker still claims students are being evacuated.
I'll have to listen on the radio for now, can't wait to hear what's really going on.

I'm very happy your son's out of there, hopefully it will turn out to be a false alarm.

NewsChannel 5 has learned that the email was reportedly sent from a computer on campus.

Authorities were questioning a person of interest.

7. Classes are cancelled but other events go on as scheduled? . . .
Well, certainly -- they've already cashed the tuition checks. Gate receipts for football, however, have yet to be collected.

When I was in the third grade, I'd have relished a week off studies for some vague and vapid cause. As an adult, shelling out good bucks for it, a couple of little fires and a bullshit email threatening unspecified harm to "the entire student body" would elicit howls of laughter followed by days of rage if some pusillanimous admin cancelled a week's worth of classes because his shorts needed changing.

Maybe there's more to this, but from what's posted here now, this seems another idiotic, fear-driven overreaction.

11. An email was sent out last night
Everyone who attends MTSU (including those of us who "attend" via online classes) was sent an email Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, October 8, 2008, several campus e-mail clients received general but threatening e-mails. The author of the threat indicated that the unspecific action would take place on October 9. An Investigation is being conducted to locate the sender. Please report any suspicious activity to Campus Police.

17. Not yet
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 01:55 PM by wysimdnwyg
However, I did find on the web site of another local TV station (http://www.wsmv.com/education/17671882/detail.html) that two small fires occurred yesterday and another this morning.

Update: I checked our online system and there are no campus-wide messages there. Very odd that a day and a half of canceled classes would not be posted there.

According to the Tennessean, David Kernell was a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

27. MTSU Student Charged With Arson, Committing Terrorist Act
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A student confessed to sending threatening e-mails that prompted Middle Tennessee State University officials to cancel classes.

"This e-mail was very generic and did not mention any particular person by name or a particular location other than the university as a whole," said MTSU Police Chief Buddy Peaster during a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Police patrolled the Murfreesboro campus as investigators tried to trace the source of the e-mails, which were transmitted beginning Wednesday night. Computers were confiscated from the campus for analysis by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

MTSU student Justin Davis, 19, was arrested for three different charges. He is held on $500,000 bond for three counts of aggravated arson at Miss Mary Hall and one count of act of terrorism.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 25. If the bond is not paid, he be in front of judge in 10 days, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

29. Dang, tnlefty,
you made me cry.

You are so welcome.

I don't have a kid so I can only imagine how awful it must be to be separated from yours during a crisis.

Too bad cell phones and the internet weren't around when I was a teenager, they probably would have added many years to my parents' lives.:)
