Putin: US Image Damaged Forever Over Economy Woes
Source: Associated Press

MOSCOW (AP) — The financial crisis has irreparably damaged the image of the U.S. as the leader of the free world and the global economy, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

Putin's remarks during a Communist Party meeting were the latest Russian attack singling out the U.S. as the chief culprit in the global financial turmoil.

"Trust in the United States as the leader of the free world and the free economy, and confidence in Wall Street as the center of that trust, has been damaged, I believe, forever," Putin said. "There will be no return to the previous situation."

Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev have repeatedly accused the U.S. of responsibility for the crisis and called for changes in the world financial system.

2. I hate Bush.
He has brought shame to this country. He has lowered the standing of our country so much that lunatics like Putin are laughing in our face and have every reason too.

13. I don't consider Putin a lunitic. But Bush, yes 100& certified looney!
I'm sick of Russia being called the "evil empire" too. It's such a 1980s term. We are the evil empire now and have been for so long with all the assisations and take over of 3rd world countries we've been involved in since we took over Hawaii and threw out their queen.

9. Wait, this doesn't make sense.
"Putin's remarks during a Communist Party meeting were the latest Russian attack singling out the U.S. as the chief culprit in the global financial turmoil."

Since when does the Communist Party invite the chairman of the United Russia party to come to their meetings?

14. If he means we'll have to explain ourselves and not be governed by greedy stupid pigs
he's right. The days we can make the rules all by ourselves are long gone, that's what happens when you elect the sort of garbage we've had in power.

We allow the Greedy Old Pinheads to keep power though......we won't have much of a say at all......

That little clique of cockroaches.

If he meant America's role though, which is a much different matter...

Leading is as leading does. We've been the leader b/c we weren't demolished in WW2 and helped others rebuild. (And then the brainfuckers started up with their propaganda, and yeah, we've spent 30-40 years wandering down the garden path. Been there before, hopefully not again.) Let's see who, if anyone, does the right thing now, and what happens from it.

Having said that, I think we handled the relationship with Russia (using the term loosely) all wrong when it collapsed, and ever since. Bush Sr. blew it bigtime. We could've helped, as we could've helped Viet Nam too, but no, that would've made too much sense... thanks to Dulles and friends, and their spawn Gingrich and friends.

The econ model that works is the one we had, which is for each soverign nation to produce as much of what it uses as possible - yep, manufacturing and all - and to trade in a win/win way for the rest. Globalization is an overthrow of democracy, which is a bad, bad deal except for the bankers - and they're parasites on the system anyway. The government can do a lot of things cheaper and better than private enterprise, and it should, banking being one of them. (Strategic utilities another.) No nation's monetary system should be controlled by private entities, that's just prepostrous nonsense and was from the beginning of it. And then globalizing that was just absurd.

So if we want to do something right for a change instead of building another house on the sand, that's what we need to get busy and do - rebuild what we had, newer, minus the more recent add-on monstrosities (Federal Reserve, globalization).

Destruction sucks, but its aftermath IS an opportunity to build something better. IF we do that. Maybe we can't get there in one step, but maybe we can in several of them.
