1. I thought she was an only child?
At least that's what she has been saying all during the campaign.

15. oh, she's really twisted.
Granted they were raised by different mothers, but still. .
In a cover story on her in the NYT a few weeks ago, the reporter recounted that Cindy Lou described herself as her dad's only daughter at his funeral, with her half-sister sitting right there, in the front row . What a piece of work. Alzheimer's might have been preferable to having to deal with a family like that. .

56. This sister who died had the same mother, different dad
Her mother had the daughter in an earlier marriage.

The other sister, who supports Obama, is the child of Cindy's father and his first wife. He left his first wife for Cindy's mother.

He actually stayed in touch with the first daughter. If I remember right it was occasional visits and birthday/Christmas greetings.

Oh the story is coming back to me. She had a credit card from her dad as an adult, maybe her son did? And when they went to use it at the time of the funeral it had been cancelled. They wasted no time doing it and didn't notify them...or that is her side of the story.

The bulk of the inheritance went to Cindy. If I recall correctly both his eldest daughter and his step=daughter, Cindy's two half sisters, got a small amount left to them, as in thousands. Imagine how that must have felt. Your daddy leaves when you are a little girl and only sees you once in a while and lives with other little girls, has a new daughter...
So she had not just you dad all her life but got all of his money.

I don't know why a dad would do that. If he felt his eldesy daughter was irresponsible or something then put it in a trust.

Cindy did state on her biography page and in interviews that she was an only child,

6. So she actually had 2 half-sisters..One thru her Mom and one thru her Dad.
I had read that the one with whom she shared a Dad was voting for Obama. There seemed to be no love lost between those two. This is the first I am hearing about this sister.

13. i like the way the AP included that little tidbit about her other half sister
They didn't need to, really, since it was her mother's other daughter who died, not the one who by rights should have inherited half the estate.

Interesting that the son of the sister who died said that they were close. That's the first time I've heard that. I would have thought she'd take offense at Cindy's calling herself an only child.

52. Her father's only child
This says nothing of the half siblings she had through her mother. If the mother retained custody, she may have been raised with them - while she wasn't with the half sister through her dad. The comment that she was her dad's only child was jaw dropping and heartless.

18. As much as I don't like anyone involved in the McPalin mafia,
I have to sympathize with Cindy right now.

I lost my mom last year to Alzheimer's. It is truly a devastating disease, and I don't wish that on even my worst enemies. May Cindy find some solace in the fact that her half-sister is finally at rest.

Please allow her and their family to grieve in peace.

...and after November 4, may she have plenty of time to remember her half-sister... in Arizona!!

Alzheimer's is incredibly difficult to deal with. Whether they had a connection or not (other than a little bit of DNA), this has still got to be painful for Cindy.
This is one of those issues that transcends party affiliation.

22. Alzheimers?
Is her sister much older than her, I wonder? Either way, wow, that has to be a blow. It seems that the whole election cycle is jinxed. Elizabeth Edwards' diagnosis in 2004, Biden's M-I-L, now Cindy McCain's half-sister. That's got to be rough.

My condolences to her and her family -whether they all got along or not, it's still family.

26. Alzheimer's is not just a disease for the elderly.
My mom was diagnosed in her 50's and she died from it in her early 60's.
Although it is quite rare, there have been cases where people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's as early as their 30's.
That said, *most* (no specific data to back this up) people living with Alzheimer's are at least in their 60's or older.

Source: AP

PHOENIX — A half sister of Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, has died of Alzheimer’s disease, the family announced.

Dixie Lea Burd, 74, died Tuesday in Phoenix. She had been in a nursing home for the past two years, her son Bob Burd said.

Cindy McCain and Dixie Burd had the same mother. Marguerite (Dixie) Johnson married Cindy McCain’s father, the late James Hensley, in 1945.

She has one on her father's side as well. NPR story -- http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=93708729

I'm willing to cut Mrs. McCain some slack on claiming to be an only child. My wife is the only child of her father's second marriage, grew up without any siblings in the house from infancy to early adulthood, so even though my wife has two half-siblings she's an only child for all practical purposes and has always thought of herself that way.

considering that she went to great lengths to avoid admitting that she even HAD any siblings. It also draws attention that Cindy McCain is the daughter of 'the other woman,' going on to become 'the other woman' in her own right.
