Palin booed at NHL game in Philadelphia
Source: CNN Ticker

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – Although many Philadelphia Flyers fans cheered and clapped as Sarah Palin took to the ice at the Wachovia Center on Saturday night to drop the ceremonial puck kicking off this town's NHL season, their warm reception was no match for the 90 seconds of sustained booing that rumbled through the arena, drowning out most of the cheers in support of the Republican vice presidential nominee.

As Palin stepped onto the ice before a capacity crowd to drop the puck, joined by her daughters Willow and Piper, the arena's jumbotron flashed a futile message to the thousands of notoriously harsh Philadelphia sports fans in attendance.

"Flyers fans, show Philadelphia's class and welcome America's #1 hockey mom, Sarah Palin," the massive electronic message board pleaded, to little effect. Booing quickly erupted when the smiling candidate emerged from a tunnel leading onto the ice, muffling the applause of any Palin supporters in the crowd.

Some in the audience simply gave her a thumbs down gesture. Others called her names.

Palin spent about a minute and a half on center ice, posing for pictures with Flyers captain Mike Richards and New York Rangers assistant captain Scotty Gomez, an Alaska native. The crowd commotion was sustained for her entire time in the rink.

Surprised that CNN reported it so straight.

52. A quote from Tip O'Neill's book, "All Politics is Local".
A great book full of practical wisdom that I read when I was running for Congress.

"Never, ever allow yourself to be introduced at a sporting event. You will be booed. And that's the only thing the media will report".

He had gotten introduced at a Red Sox game, and was booed.

Makes sense when you consider sports events are inherently antagonistic and actually encourage rabid public expression of it.

84. And he's from Boston
Everyone knows that Phillyfans(any sport) and Raderfans are a different breed. Even if Palin was intelligent, honest and pure as the driven snow she would've been booed. (Eagle fans once booed Santa Clause, lol) But seeing this chick get booed was great.

114. Eagles fans only booed Santa because the real Santa actor didn't show up
The guy who replaced him was skinny and totally untrained, and the halftime show was a disaster. The man himself says to this day, that if he'd been in the stands, he would've been booing, too.

Quit perpetuating this myth about Eagles fans being "bad" because they "booed Santa". They booed a crappy halftime show, that's all.

A lie is halfway around the world before the truth puts on its boots....

There are several links around here somewhere. Or you can look on Youtube for "Hockeymom gets booed at Flyers game". In some clips it's hard to hear the boos but there is one where you can hear it very clearly over the loud music.

96. I watched it live.
What was interesting is that they played some music and piped in applause. You could tell it was amplified because you could see some of the crowd in the background and maybe two of ten were applauding. That drowned out the booing, unfortunately, on TV at least. But I heard the booing and cheered.

17. Eh, boo-ing is so boring
Now, yelling, "OH, I HATE THE COLONEL WITH HIS WEE BEADY EYES!" in a Scottish brogue loudly enough for the entire stadium to hear when the opposing team's coach (who looked like Colonel Sanders) stepped out onto the ice, and there was just a few seconds of silence - that's classy.

That's a, "So, I Married an Axe Murderer," quote by the way (Mike Myers movie).

19. Philly fans' rogue image got boost when Santa booed in 1968
PHILADELPHIA -- Those famously churlish Philly fans can't hide behind the urban legends. The truth is out there: They simply booed Santa Claus.

Frank Olivo -- the erstwhile Santa in question -- wasn't drunk, nor was his red suit in tatters that December day in 1968 when he walked onto the field for the halftime show, only to be met by a chorus of jeers and a snowball fusillade from Eagles fans.

But by all accounts, they had cause for an ugly mood.

"The fans carried on like that because the Eagles were horrible," Olivo said.

The antics at halftime of the Eagles' final regular-season game, beamed around the country on Howard Cosell's national sports show, helped cement Philadelphia's reputation for having rogue, rowdy sports fans.

"There's nothing that sounds worse than throwing snowballs at Santa," said sports radio host Glen Macnow of WIP-AM in Philadelphia. "It's like spitting on Miss America."

22. This was on Center Ice, coast-to-coast
I flipped on the beginning of the Flyers game before going to dinner, expecting to see a recap of the Palin puck-drop, but instead they showed it live, just before the game began. Anyone with Center Ice could see it.

And let me tell you, the booing was LOUD. Fans were visibly upset, on-camera, that Palin was invited to this game, and they definitely hit a crescendo of boos whenever the blaring music paused for the PA announcer to say a few words.

I hate the Flyers, but I now respect the hell out of their fans.

As a Pittsburgher, Philly is our natural rival in football as well as hockey. This showing of real emotion and honesty has given me a reason to respect the fans there and to root for them, except when they play the Steelers or Pens of course. Did you notice, no racial slurs, no shouts of traitor, just the good old Bronx cheer. Good for them.

Granted, the mom shouldn't have used her as a political prop, but even if your mother's the antichrist, it can't be too great to watch your mom get booed by 10,000 people. telling him to keep his politics to himself and that he should have had Tina Fey there instead of Palin. Fey would have been cheered. I told him it was his worst public relations disaster. What was he thinking in a 90% Democratic city? Plus everyone saw him on tv at Palin's rally at the Irish Pub the night of the first Presidential debate. What a moron.

80. No, Snider should have stuck to hockey, period.
I am a big hockey fan. And I HATE these kind of stunts before games. This includes when the PA guy says, "please rise to honor America with our national anthem," and then they sing "God Bless America" first. That is BS, plain and simple.

So, rather than inviting Obama instead of Palin, Snider should have just remembered that this is a HOCKEY GAME, not a campaign rally. This wasn't about who gives the best speech; it was about the fact that those fans paid for a sports ticket, not to be props in a photo-op for a political tool.

Palin Drops Puck at Flyer’s Game Receives Mixed Reaction
by Shushannah Walshe
PHILADELPHIA –-

Sarah Palin has become known as “The Most Famous Hockey Mom in America” for her constant referral to herself on the stump as “just a hockey mom.” This evening, she met that title head on by dropping the first puck of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey season in their opener with the New York Rangers.

A carpet was laid down and Palin, dressed in a beige trench, walked on to the ice joined by her daughters Willow and Piper. The GOP Vice-Presidential nominee said at an earlier fundraiser that she would stop some of the booing from the rowdy Philadelphia fans by putting her seven year old daughter, Piper in a Flyers jersey. She said, “How dare they boo Piper!”

Her secret weapon may have worked. The crowd in this staunchly Democratic city –visited today by Barack Obama—gave Palin mixed reviews. There were audible boos over the very loud music and some in the crowd had their thumbs down, but there were also many people clapping and cheering the GOP Vice-Presidential nominee.

Once she got on the ice she met the woman who won the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” contest, Cathy O’Connell from Erdenheim, Pennsylvania and patted her on the back. Flyers captain Mike Richards skated over to shake Palin’s hand and fellow Alaskan and New York Ranger Scotty Gomez greeted his Governor who gave him a kiss on the cheek. Palin then leaned over for the face off between the two players and dropped the puck.

The Palins joined by the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” walked off the ice waving to the crowd.

39. Very proud of my city
Obama was greetly so warmly at a local diner the other day - Bruce entertained tens of thousands for free on the Parkway -- and now these great Philadelphians booed Sarah Palin.

I was sorry her children were there. These fans booed Santa -- so there was no hope of them holding back, despite jumbotron signs pleading with them to be nice.

74. Yes, I am one of those fans, but ...
I'll have to admit I was a little worried that the fans were NOT going to BOO enough. Many of the fans are from south Jersey. I have heard more then a few state their reasons for liking hockey to be that there is "no pepper in my salt." Plus, lots of corporate seats. But, they did BOO. And you could tell Snyder/Comcast was trying desperately to hide it. I am pissed that they injected politics into my sports. I watch sport so I don't have to think about politics. Fuck Snyder. May have to go back to boycotting the team.

66. See that's how delusional and out of touch McCain's campaign is
This was going to be a disaster of epic proportions. If I was a McCain aide sitting in a meeting and this idea was brought up I would have said: "Palin? At a hockey game in Philly? You'd have to be crazy!!" That this was even entertained at all tells me they don't know much. A liberal populace with notoriously prickly hockey fans, plus lots of beer and a national joke/RW nutjob from a small town who demonizes people from big cities.

There was no possible way this was going to work out well for her. No way.

McCain might have the dumbest campaign I have ever seen. After this race is over these guys should just retire from politics and go into something else. They suck.

73. Sarah Palin = "America's Favorite Hockey Mom"
Bringing America's favorite hockey mom to a hockey game in a state that the Republicans need to win the election seems, on the surface, to be an ingenious move. But when one thinks about it a little and applies more than a little common sense, it is, as you have pointed out, clearly a catastrophe in the making.

I think the problem with the McCain campaign is that they actually BELIEVE their own bullshit. Since they truly believe that Palin is America's Favorite Hockey Mom, they thought that this was a great idea without any further thought on the matter. It's similar to how they chose Palin in the first place. That whole decision was based on the fraudulent idea that there were disgruntled Hillary supporters who would rush out in droves to vote for a woman for President, no matter who the hell it was.

75. I get the impression they just think of something and all go "That's great!"
"Ok, let's do it!" then run off and never think about it more than a few seconds. It's bizarre. I think it comes from the top. McCain is erratic, he seems to change his mind based on the last person who talks to him rather than stepping back and putting all the info together and doing his thing. Bush may not be the brightest bulb around, but compared to McCain his discipline is astounding. People look at McCain and see 4 years of chaos. You just know you'll get 4 years of ill-conceived and rash moves, and you'll have a guy who is and will be angry the whole time. Nobody wants an erratic president who is less disciplined than Bush and who blows up and dissent and cries around blaming it on the media or his opponents etc. It's surreal watching this guy. And he's supposed to be the seasoned steady pro while Obama is the reckless neophyte? lol

81. WTF???? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
The players were already introduced, and both teams were on the ice circling around to cheers and applause before Frau Palin was introduced. And as soon she walked out on the carpet and started her dumb f*$k waving, the chorus of boos commenced, subsequently drowned out by some bombastic orchestral fanfare.

I feel sorry for the woman who had actually won the contest who lives just over the city line, not far from where I live. No one has reported whether she is Dem or repuke but it was supposed to be her honor and that was preempted by this nonsense with Mooselini.

I mean, they might boo the Rangers, but when both teams are on the ice and have been introduced, the idea that they start booing the players again after Scary Palin comes walking out with her kids is ludicrous.

And I had to laugh when I saw/heard in another thread that the announcer said to show some Philly class. What Philly fan class?

I'm a Penguins fan, when I went to Philly to see a game last season, I'm lucky to have escaped with my head.

Shit-ass awful fans. Their team sucks too, lost to their minor league affiliate.

But I am impressed with how stupid the Palin-McCain camp was to go to the strongest Democratic stronghold in PA and expect a warm reception. Seriously, Philadelphia fans booed Santa Claus and Wayne Gretzky. A symbol of hope and joy, and the best hockey player of all time. What chance did Palin have?
