Alcan's Profit Soars on Rising Metals Prices

MONTREAL (Dow Jones/AP) - Alcan Inc.'s profit jumped fourfold in the latest quarter as revenue climbed, the Canadian aluminum giant said Monday.
Alcan, after Alcoa the world's largest producer of aluminum, said tight cost management and higher metals prices offset a weaker U.S. dollar, a sluggish economy and restructuring costs.

Alcan added that the stronger results indicate the company can maintain operating focus in the midst of a major acquisition. Alcan completed a $4.79 billion tender for French aluminum company Pechiney SA in December. That acquisition isn't reflected in Alcan's latest results.
