MLB pushes back World Series Game 6 by 8 minutes
4 hours, 24 minutes ago

Buzz Up PrintNEW YORK (AP)—Major League Baseball has agreed to push back the start time of a potential World Series Game 6 by eight minutes to allow Democrat Barack Obama to purchase a half-hour of air time on the Fox network.

Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said Thursday that the game time would now be set for 8:35 p.m.

The Obama presidential campaign said Oct. 9 that it had bought the 8-8:30 p.m slot on CBS and NBC.

“Fox will accommodate Senator Obama’s desire to communicate with voters in this long-form format,” network spokesman Lou D’Ermilio said in a statement. “We are pleased that Major League Baseball has agreed to delay the first pitch of World Series Game 6 for a few minutes in order for Fox to carry his program on Oct. 29. If requested, the network would be willing to make similar time available to Senator McCain’s campaign.”

The World Series has not gone to a sixth game since 2003.

The decision was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

7. holy cow, is this unprecedented?
not the delaying of the game, but a presidential candidate buying a half hour on 3 networks at once to speak to the public.

I've never heard of it.

10. Don't you remember Ross Perot?
He had those folksy 30 minutes "infomercials" that were paid for out of his own pocket and I believe they were aired on all the major networks.

9. Could be because they wanted to make room for McCain attack ads afterward
Are those 5 minutes going to be baseball broadcast or ads before the game starts? Just wondering

12. I don't imagine they're going to go directly from Obama to the 1st pitch...
They'll probably do a commercial or two and then 5 minutes of baseball intro.

16. I think here it's about the law
Fox has to offer Obama the slot at very low infomercial-type rates. They will definitely not be making money off of this. I'm pretty sure he (and FOX) didn't want to preempt the beginning of a possible game six of the world series, so this was a good solution short of simply staying off of that network.

13. Of course, this assumes that there will be a game 6...
Series could be over by game 4 or 5.

18. Great. We know a team from PA will be in the Series.
And possibly one from FL as well. All we need is to lose the ticked-off fan vote in two huge battleground states over this. :tinfoilhat:

Oh, right. The Rays don't actually have any fans. Silly me. :-)
