Plain Dealer endorses Obama for president

Posted by The editors October 18, 2008 22:59PM

After eight years of George W. Bush, America needs a change in direction and a change in tone.

It needs a president who understands that, yes, the world can be dangerous, but it is also complex. That the United States cannot defend its freedom by abandoning its principles. That it cannot ignore its allies one day and demand their help the next.

It needs a president who knows that optimism, not fear, defines America. That tax cuts and deregulation alone are not an economic strategy. That Washington cannot sit idle when a great city is devastated by nature or when millions of hardworking Americans are devastated by losing their homes, their jobs, their health care.
It needs a president who will listen and learn, and not confuse loyalty with competence. Who will ask Americans to sacrifice in the service of their country, not their party or self-interest. Who will be the leader Bush promised eight years ago -- a unifier, not a divider.

Barack Obama can be that leader.

He is young and obviously cannot match the government experience of his Republican opponent, John McCain. But from the moment he electrified the 2004 Democratic Convention by declaring that America's shared values must trump its racial, religious and ideological divisions, Obama has demonstrated uncommon grace, confidence and intelligence.

3. I was afraid that they would blow this one
They have been endorsing Republicans on the lamest bases for local races. There is no reason to replace county commissioner Peter Lawson Jones or Congressman Kucinich, but they wrote a twisted rationale for both races.

5. No...they left that task to the...
frickin-frackin Columbus Dispatch who endorsed McCain in a rant of bullshit that basically boiled down to "he was a POW and went through a lot of stuff". :puke: Not that I was surprised...oh well...there goes my subscription...

10. Welcome to DU!
I hope my mom finally drops her subscription to the Dispatch. She's been telling me it's "moderate" for years and I've been telling her it's not, she'll probably agree today.

4. And the Houston Chronicle as well
In comments to the Chronicle editorial board during his Texas primary fight against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama explained why he believed he would be the best choice for president.

"More than any other candidate, I could bridge some of the partisan, racial and religious divides in this country that prevent us from getting things done," said Obama. "I believe that I could attract independents and some disillusioned Republicans into a working majority to bring about change on critical issues."

Back in the spring, Obama's sentiments seemed more a hope than reality. Since then, we have watched him grow in the roles of candidate and leader, maintaining grace under fire without resorting to political expediency. He is by far the best choice to deliver the changes that Americans demand.

7. Utah's Salt Lake Tribune THROWS McCAIN-PALIN under the Elephant! DISQUALIFIED
Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune endorsed Obama on Oct. 17: (excerpt)

Out of nowhere, and without proper vetting, the impetuous McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She quickly proved grievously underequipped to step into the presidency should McCain, at 72 and with a history of health problems, die in office. More than any single factor, McCain's bad judgment in choosing the inarticulate, insular and ethically challenged Palin disqualifies him for the presidency. ...

They are ridiculous

We might not be in some of the trouble we're in if more people had had the sense they're pretending to have now.

9. Anyone know WHY the Blame Dealer withheld endorsement in 2004?
Because their fascist of a publisher at the time more or less told the editorial board, who was ready to give the Kerry endorsement by a slim margin, that "We endorse George W Bewsh or we endorse NO one. Period."

So, like any cowards who didn't stand up to those in power, they endorsed NO one. And Cuyahoga County went for Kerry, but was rife with electoral fraud, long waiting times (much like EVERY Dem precinct) and miscounted votes. The free dailies and national papers had a field day.

Alex Machaskee is and remains a corrupt bastard enabler who turned this paper into a laughingstock, much like his man Bewsh, who turned this country into one.

The Plain Dealer looks a little better in my eyes this morning, righting a great wrong for 8 years. You KNOW Brent Larkin and Kevin O'Brien didn't agree with this. But no matter.

Unbelievable that the Columbus ShitPatch STILL has a case of the stupids. Any paper who endorses McCain is just a McPravdan arm at this point. Bad Republican policies can never be cured by worse Republican policies. Does the Shitpatch think they're going to influence blue Franklin county with their bullshit endorsements?

I had hoped that the leaders of the Dispatch had woken up and seen daylight but apparently not.

14. Fuck Larkin and O'Brien, I hope
their heads are exploding over their sausage and biscuits this morning. Those two hateful enablers (ESPECIALLY O'Brien, who will require surgery to ever remove his entire upper body from the repub party's ass) have done more damage to the PeeDee than anyone else besides Machaskee. I am delighted to see that the PeeDee is really going downhill in every way. The only thing that makes me feel bad about that is the fact that PeeDee employees are also being laid off and, as usual, it's the lower-level rank and file and not the mucky-mucks who are getting the ax. But that is the ONLY thing.

There are just a couple of things that I miss about Northeast Ohio after moving from there to South Dakota a few years ago, mainly family and friends. But I absolutely do NOT miss the PeeDee at all, and you know it's bad when the Rapid City Journal, frankly, is a much better paper than the PeeDee. I was home visiting for the holidays this past Christmas and I couldn't believe how far down the shitter the PeeDee had gone. It was really pathetic. And the thing is, a lot of it has happened since their bullshit refusal to make an endorsement four years ago. Ain't poetic justice sweet?
