Columbus Dispatch endorses McCain

A lifetime of sacrifice and service make John McCain best choice
Sunday, October 19, 2008 3:39 AM

For president of the United States, The Dispatch endorses Republican Sen. John McCain, whose experience, service and sacrifice for his country make him more qualified to lead the nation.

McCain's Democratic opponent, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, is a rousing motivational speaker, but his experience and achievements -- eight years in the Illinois Legislature and less than four in the U.S. Senate -- do not stand comparison with McCain's.

A resume containing so little evidence of leadership and accomplishment leaves in question Obama's ability to handle the most responsible and difficult job in the world, especially at a time when the nation faces a combination of problems so large and complex that they would challenge even the most seasoned leader.

Nor does it seem likely that a man who has traveled in the left lane of American politics for his entire adult life really is the bipartisan centrist that he claims to be. And with Democrats already in control of the U.S. House and Senate -- and the possibility that they might gain a filibuster-proof majority in the next Senate -- there would be little to check the inevitable excesses of one-party rule if a Democrat wins the White House.

1. John McCain could be a Satan-worshipper and that would be their reason for voting for him.
The Dispatch is and has always been in the tank.

5. They endorsed Bush twice...
and have spent the last 8 years using misleading headlines and article placement to try to hide his failures. As with Bush's reign, they'll take no responsibility for the deaths that would result from a McCain presidency.

Of course, today's Dispatch was filled with dire stories about ACORN and voter fraud.

7. In 2004 The Dispatch called Iraq a bloody hell hole w/ no bottom but ....
... still they endorsed bush. If you can look @ Obama's life amd
up to his campaign and see "A resume containing so little evidence of
leadership and accomplishment .... " then you are either stupid or
lying.

Both Jonathan Riskind & Mark Niquette who write for the Dispatch have
been busy w/ the "Ohio 2004 was fine but that evil new Dem. Sec. of State
is trying to steal the election in 2008," meme.

8. The Ohio economy's been in the tank for the past decade. Repubs ran the whole show until '06.
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 08:56 AM by bulloney
They've controlled the state supreme court, House and Senate for over a decade. The Taft Administration combined incompetence and corruption. The state cabinet positions were a game of musical chairs among several Republicans who switch from one to the other, like Betty Montgomery and everybody's darling...Ken Blackwell.

You're right about the Columbus Dispatch's myopic political vision. The Republican ticket for president could be Hitler/Mussolini and the Dispatch would endorse it.

We at the Columbus Dispatch think our endorsement of the Hitler/Mussolini
ticket shows our mind set; "Now their is a team that can get the country moving
in the right direction. Hitler with his Autobahn and Mussolini with his getting
the trains to run on time show they have an understanding for ....... "

16. Living within their market area,
I don't know which is worse, their editorial cartoons which play to the RNC talking points, their editorials which are Faux Newsesque, or their letters to the editor. There is no intellectual honesty, only more of the dumbing down of American politics. They would caricature David Brooks as easily as David Gergen if either deviates from their (the Dispatch's) worldview. I find this most striking given the proximity of dozens of universities and colleges. Thank goodness I get the Sunday NY Times. (And I used to think the Kansas City Star was narrowly focused, I beg forgiveness!).

18. Not only endorsing but running a smear campaign against SOS Jennifer Brunner:
Dispatch smear campaign against Brunner is about delivering Ohio to the GOP
March 29, 2008

The Columbus Dispatch is in the middle of its most blatant editorial propaganda campaign since the questioning of the late Columbus School Board member Bill Moss' sanity in a front page article.

Their new target is Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. The capitol city's daily monopoly and political bludgeon for the multimillionaire Wolfe family's real agenda is ensuring that the Republican Party control Ohio's Apportionment Board after the 2010 census. The party that controls apportionment gerrymanders the state.

The Wolfe family has not allowed a Democrat to be endorsed for President since the re-election of Woodrow Wilson in 1916. In that campaign, the Wolfe's pro-German sentiments won out over their time-honored role as Republican operatives.

The Republican Party believes that Brunner is the most politically vulnerable of the five-member Apportionment Board. The Secretary of State serves along with the Governor, the State Auditor and two members of the state legislature – one from each party by law. Do the math. Brunner's a Dem, so is Governor Strickland. Mary Taylor, the Auditor, is a Republican. It's now 3-2 for the Dems.

If the Dispatch and the other Republican editorial boards around the state can whip up an anti-Brunner frenzy, then the Republicans, despite their recent erosion of support in the Buckeye State, can cling to power.

19. Sad. Even the conservative-leaning Cleveland Plain Dealer endorsed Obama.
It's also interesting that the Dispatch McCain endorsement doesn't mention Palin's name even once. I have never read a more poorly written piece of propaganda.

20. I wouldn't sweat it too much...
As of 10/19, among the top 100 papers, Obama has been endorsed by papers with a circulation of 7.6 Million, McCain by papers with a circulation of 1.5 Million.
