Keith Olbermann just spoke about it on MSNBC as breaking news!

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Democrat Barack Obama is cancelling nearly all his campaign events Thursday and Friday to fly to Hawaii to visit his suddenly ill 86-year-old grandmother.

Campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Monday that Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, who helped raise him, was released from the hospital late last week. But he says her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious.

Gibbs said Obama would return to the campaign trail on Saturday, though he was unsure where.

Obama events originally planned for Madison, Wis., and Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday will be replaced with one in Indianapolis before he makes the long flight to Hawaii.

Good healing wishes and hats off to Barack's Grandmother who has had such an influence on our future President. :(

22. He has to do what he has to do.
He has no choice. This is the woman who raised him. He will go. Can you imagine the McCainites claims of how uncaring he would be if he didn't? His decision is the right one. Anyone who has had a loved one losing the battle with life (and we all will), will understand. To fail to do what he is doing would play into the hands of those who support the opposition.

36. A good granny can watch from the other side. Hillary is an angel.
I have never been a big Hillary fan but she has me taking another long look now. She is jumping back in the ring to help the person that smashed her dreams in a long hard fight. Obama puts her on point, not just filling in for the VP, but right in his shoes. That says a lot about Hillary in many ways.

38. You have to remember, too, that both Clintons lost
family members and close friends while Bill was in office. The opposition and the haters were callous and downright cruel to them in their grief. Surely they would not want anyone else to go without support at a time like this. I know I wouldn't.

42. Obama is taking a few days off from his campaign to be with ailing grandmother
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 07:00 AM by Christa
Source: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20081021/twl-obama-leaves-campaign-trail-41f21e0.html

Barack Obama has announced he will leave the US presidential campaign trail to be with his sick grandmother.

The Democrat White House hopeful will go to an event in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Thursday, then fly to Hawaii to see Madelyn Dunham, who will be 86 on Sunday.

He cancelled events in Madison, Wisconsin, and Des Moines, Iowa, which had been scheduled for Thursday, after hearing of her failing health.

Mrs Dunham helped raise the Illinois senator along with his mother, Ann Dunham, and his grandfather, Stanley Dunham.

Obama aide Robert Gibbs said: "Recently his grandmother has become ill and in the last few weeks her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious.

"Senator Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life.

"Along with his mother and his grandfather, she raised him in Hawaii from the time he was born until the moment he left for college.

"As he said at the Democratic Convention, she poured everything she had into him.

43. i hate the term "suspend" with this
he didn't "suspend" as that would imply stopping the campaign. what he is doing is taking time off the campaign trail to be with his grandmother and other family.

the campaign is still going on with others, especially us.

53. The silver lining ......
While I wish that Obama's GM was healthy to fully experience and enjoy his victory and while my best wishes go out to her, the HI photo ops will make a lot of people undecided because of the race see the "white" half side of Obama and will perhaps make them feel less biased. His race shouldn't matter in a perfect world at all but we don't live in a perfect world. Then again, I could be too optimistic about the wreched bigots.
