White supremacists target middle America
Source: USA Today

The white-power movement is changing its marketing strategy to broaden its appeal.

The USA's largest neo-Nazi group is ditching its trademark brown Nazi uniform with swastika armband for a more muted look in black fatigues.

"Many white supremacist groups are going more mainstream," says Jack Levin, a Northeastern University criminologist who studies hate crime. "They are eliminating the sheets and armbands. … The groups realize if they want to be attractive to middle-class types, they need to look middle-class."

From 2006 to 2007, the number of such groups rose by 5% to 888, says the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which tracks them through news reports and other sources. The number is up 48% since 2000.

The FBI knows of about 24 domestic terrorist groups. Spokesman Richard Kolko would not say how many are white supremacists.

Don Black, once a Ku Klux Klan leader in Alabama, says he's encouraged by the enthusiasm he sees.

"We see a lot of people coming out of the woodwork," he says.

21. It's not that they lie and call themselves Christian that is so much the probelm
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 08:04 AM by Phred42
It's that the others that call themselves Christian, those that actually believe in and follow the teachings of Jesus, stay quiet about it.

These Fascists are following a religion made up ABOUT Jesus rather than the religion OF Jesus.

If there were any true followers of the religion OF Jesus they would have to stand up and openly Denounce these head-cases.

But they don't. Why is that?

Maybe it's all just a bunch of crap?

They are fake Christians of course. You have a great point the ones who call themselves Christians are pretty fake too. Legitimate Christians have been putting up with these posers for centuries now. It's time for things to change.

25. Perzactly
Jesus only cited two commandments ever and He called those the greatest. Now, I'm just thinkin' out loud here, but I believe it would be impossible to hate one's fellow human by following the first and impossible not to love G'd humbly and quietly by following the second.

YMMV.

26. That is also the implication of Jesus' account of the Last Judgment -
as I think you are implying that failure to honour the second, automatically negates honouring the first.

This is not to downplay the obligation of evangelisation by the Church, although, for too long in the past, its motives have been as questionable as the religious persecutions that took place under its auspices. I believe Pope John Paul II stated that the martyrs under such intra-Christian pogroms were the victims of power politics, rather than any Christian rationale. "My father's house has many mansions".

45. I think we're on the same page
and I think the converse is true: If one honors either, the will -- even the need -- to honor the other would naturally flow. That is my perception and my interpretation rather than any particular church doctrine. Again, YMMV.

As for evangelization, I'm very uneasy with that whole discussion. That's a concept that's foreign and objectionable to my faith and personal beliefs, but something upon which the RW absolutely depends and thrives. I'll allow that it was probably benign and well-intended at its inception, but it's now something else the RW (as with self-termed "conservatives" through history) have co-opted for nefarious purposes (as in "be with us or you are against us"). That certainly appears to be the case of the subverted form of "Christianity" used by the hate-groups.

As I perceive it, indeed there are "many mansions"; much diversity brought forth by a brilliant craftsBeing of a Creator. What a delightful panoply to be celebrated! By cutting themselves off from love and friendship, the haters are missing so much.

They natter on about "storing up treasures in Heaven". I never saw a casket with a luggage rack. The only thing you can take from this life to the next are the snapshot memories you make along the way: the newborn you held, their first day at school, the stranger you gave a blanket to, a smile a stranger gave you when you really needed one, puppy breath, the color purple in a field... and on and on. That's all you get; that's the sum total of a life. If one wastes it in sour hate, guess what one gets to live with for eternity. But if one lives in love now -- indeed, those snapshot memories will be treasures later on.

I categorically don't believe in a burning hell. But having to live with a pile of sour memories from a life wasted in hatred would be worse than any lake of fire IMHO, especially realizing what could have been.

35. They are right in calling themselves Christians
Though wrong in calling themselves followers of Christ.

The natural result of organized dogmatic religion is orthodoxy and doctrine. Name on religion that has not called for its followers to recite a particular creed or behave in a particular fashion. Looking through history and examining the tenets of Christianity and other patriarchical Sun God religons.... this is exactly what you can expect.

62. So exactly which neighbors did Christ say we should hate and kill?
Well Christ didn't have much if anything to say on the subject, But his GOD has plenty. Which neighbors does Yahweh and Jehovah want you to kill? All of them! "Thou shalt not kill" means "Thou shalt not kill other Hebrews" because for the rest of that book they kill everyone in sight. Just like Saul says to David "Bring me 1000 foreskins of the Philistines!" (and he does)

But you bring up an excellent point. I might argue that distribution is mostly responsible for the success of your examples, though that technically is part of the marketing mix. Part of their success might also be attributed to how they've wrapped the flag around their burgers and bottles and are now as American as apple pie and baseball.

The one thing they don't sell is hate. Obesity, substance abuse, gout, yes. But not hate.

42. You have to remember that we are used to these people.
We deal with them every day. We know they are there.

I listen to them everyday in the little place where I eat lunch. I hear from them every morning where I eat breakfast. I see their trucks with the confederate flag in the window every day.

New marketing of their weird product isn't going to sway people here. We all know who they are. A lot of them are our neighbors.

I never get into verbal debates with these people. I just ignore them if I can. I'm always polite and then I just leave as quickly as possible.

23. Several minds
are mulling this problem today. RoveCo went after and encouraged exactly that sort of low-life and their "churches". That's exactly the "base" of the GOP these days. Rove went after the stupidest, most cowardly, most disgusting, least motivated dregs of society, fanned the flames of their hatreds, and duped them into voting against their country, the Constitution, and their own best interests.

You just can't cure stupid. What's "coming out of the woodwork" will be the very thing to finish off the GOP for good.

46. When people get angry, they look for scapegoats
Its a knee jerk reaction to their anger. Their frustration with their own economic status, whatever hardships they are going through. It worked for the Nazis, they fed into it after Germany was trounced in WW1. The good German people were angry, and Hitler knew that nationalism could be fed by blaming someone. Scapegoating has been around for a long long time.
I read the Malleus Mallefecorum once, the Witches Hammer, used by the Inquisition to scapegoat women and blame them for the ills of society. Its actually pretty awful but amusing..they blame women for male impotence , for one, in the book. Its good bathroom reading.
Its very handy for the government if it's citizenry is blaming each other. That keeps them all infighting and pointing fingers at each other.
That keeps the populace from looking at the real culprits..wealthy corporations, greedy corrupt politicians.
But I truly believe there are a lot of people out there who wont scapegoat, and are reasonable people who wont point fingers at their neighbours, but will try to find common ground and work with each other rather then against each other.
or, as Anne Frank said, 'Despite everything,I believe that people are really good at heart.'
If that little girl can say it, I can believe it also.

because we have three hate groups in Nebraska and one close to home like two hours away. I never knew about it till now. But the sad thing is I think my little cousin is hanging around some of them. And that's sad because he has three members that are half colored. And the only reason why he is like that because he was lock up. People that are lock up think that all colored people are the same when they get out. It's the same with my bother and my daughter's father. It's pretty sad because my daughter's father think he is gonna teach her that blacks are bad, no sorry I grow up with black people they were the kindess person I know. I told him that he can't teach her that stuff because I am colored. Then he said she my daughter and I will teach whatever I want. What a dick.

from a friend horrified by this:

Hate You Can Believe In: ACORN Deluged with Threatening and Racist Voicemails and Emails
By Josh
Created Oct 18 2008 - 9:42pm

It’s bad enough that the employees of ACORN <1> have had to endure days of baseless and outlandish attacks <2> by John McCain and the RNC. But after McCain outrageously claimed before a national audience on Wednesday night that ACORN was “maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy,” the group came under attack <3>, literally. In the following days, ACORN’s Boston and Seattle offices were vandalized and at least one employee received a death threat.

And for nearly two weeks, ACORN offices across the nation have been subjected to an onslaught of racist and threatening voicemails and emails. We have secured copies of some of the most disturbing and offensive messages and have reproduced them below in order to show the very real consequences of the Right Wing’s overheated and misplaced “voter fraud” rhetoric.

Warning: the emails and voicemails below are highly explicit and have only been edited to remove personally identifying information. Please also note that, where relevant, the proper authorities have been notified.

Voicemail #1:

“Hi, I was just calling to let you all know that Barack Obama needs to get hung. He's a fucking nigger, and he's a piece of shit. You guys are fraudulent, and you need to go to hell. All the niggers on oak trees. They're gonna get all hung honeys, they're gonna get assassinated, they're gonna get killed.”

Email #1: This email was received by the Cleveland office. The subject line was the name of a senior staffer who had recently appeared on TV to defend the group.

"...is going to have her life ended"

According to McClatchy <3>, the email was traced back to a Facebook account featuring a McCain-Palin sign.

Email #2:

"You blue gums are not going to steal the election
You porch moneys need to all go back to Africa"

Voicemail #2:

"You liberal idiots. Dumb shits. Welfare bums. You guys just fucking come to our country, consume every natural resource there is, and make a lot of babies. That's all you guys do. And then suck up the welfare and expect everyone else to pay for your hospital bills for your kids. I just say let your kids die. That's the best move. Just let your children die. Forget about paying for hospital bills for them. I'm not gonna do it. You guys are lowlifes. And I hope you all die."

****************

Doncha just love the accusations?

Dems stealing the election.... 2000 and 2004 anyone?

Liberals consume every natural resource there is.... Yep, that's liberalism to a T. Must be why liberals got us into looting Iraq's resources and all that war stuff that goes with that.

Make lots of babies... like the Palins? They can't even wait til they're married or out of high school! Besides I thought liberals KILLED babies!

And of course the ol' welfare complaint...with nary a word about the corporate welfare and perks for companies like Exxon/Mobil....before the "crisis!".

These people really are conservatives! Still fighting the battles of the 1950's! Now that's conserving!

I also got an e-mail today asking for me to make a 30 second spot telling why I was "Joe the Plumber" and why I support McCain/Palin. I'd love to make one stating I'm just like "Joe the plumber" because my name isn't really Joe and I don't have a plumber's license and I think Obama's plan would hurt me. I'm supporting McCain/Palin because, like them, I am a character that doesn't really exist.

I also got a robo-call telling me "We need to keep Liberal's hands off our money! The Democratic Congress has presided over the worst financial meltdown since the Great Depression...." See the financial crisis is really the 2 year old Dem Congress' fault....in case you thought it had something to do with deregulation policies the Repugs have been rubberstamping through for the past 8 years.

I'll be glad when this is all over. But it's nice to see the Repugs so desperate, they can't hide their true nature. The GOP will be known as the party of hate and bigotry... because it is.... for a long time now. Especially if something happens. I mean, you'd think Timothy McVeigh would have been enough, but they disowned him.

65. Oh lookie. Some Nazi scumbags went clothes shopping.
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 02:01 PM by Jamastiene
And now they feel a need to announce it to the world.

Man, oh man...they were just asking for it with this flamboyant announcement. The comedic gold mine from this is going to cause a rush like none in recorded history. I do so love it when hatemongers shit and fall back in it.

I do wonder where they get their uniforms. Kmart? Wal-Mart? Where does the KKK get their uniforms? The Laundromat? Behind some hospital somewhere? Where do the seamstresses get the patterns to sew the funny looking hoods? Who manufactures the patches and other symbols of ignorance and hate they wear on their funny looking costumes?

The whole bunch of them dress funny, no matter what, it seems.

So, the Nazi scumbags got some spiffy new uniforms.
Give them a cookie. They are still Nazi scumbags.

69. Said it before, I'll say it again!
Maybe more people will believe me now. THis is from Paula Cole from several years ago, but becoming more and more true.

Hitler's Brothers

Little boy, tries to hide,
From the fire in his backyard.
Burning cross, white cloth,
It's the second time this year.

Hitler's Brothers are still alive,
They're wearing everyday disguises.

A woman runs, for asylum,
She's the only one of her kind in this neighborhood.
She knows who they were,
They don't believe a word,
The cops just turn their heads to protect their friends.

Hitler's Brothers are still alive,
Their army seems to grow in size,
Hitler's Brothers are on the rise,
They're wearing everyday disguises.
...In camouflage or business suits.

Another man, bound and gagged,
Tied upon the railroad tracks.
At nine pm, the B & M (Boston & Maine)
Rolled across his yellow skin.

Hitler's Brothers are still alive,
Their army seems to grow in size,
Hitler's Brothers are on the rise,
They're wearing everyday disguises.
In camouflage or business suits,
Checkered aprons, combat boots,

Time to let those feelings go,
Hatred only kills your souls.

I think belonging to a neo-Nazi/white supremacist group needs to be a crime in this country, like it is in Europe. Best way to deal with these bastards is to prevent them from organizing in the first place. They want to advocate murdering everyone who's not a white fundamentalist? Then we ought to treat them like the terrorists they are. Forcibly disband their groups, arrest their leaders, try them on terrorism charges, convict them, and send them to jail without parole.

We especially must not let them have any influence in police departments or the military. Any policeman or military service member who is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to belong to a neo-Nazi/white supremacist organization needs to be arrested, tried for treason, convicted, and executed.

We absolutely cannot let these bastards get any kind of significant foothold. They've been marginalized for years, but as people who served in WWII and Holocaust survivors die off, these slime are trying to bring their organizations into the mainstream. They cannot be allowed to get away with it.
